ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Bemidji State University kicker/punter Jesse Sundby (So., Argyle, Minn.) has been selected as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. The announcement came today from the league office following the Beavers’ Sept. 19, 38-13 victory over Minnesota State University, Moorhead.
Sundby played a pivotal role in the Beavers’ quest to regain the coveted Battle Axe traveling trophy Saturday. The sophomore was a perfect five-for-five on point-after tries and split the uprights from 34 yards out on his only field goal attempt of the afternoon. In addition, Sundby handled punting and kickoff duties. He punted three times for an average of 50.0 yards, which included a career-best, 61-yard bomb to pin the Dragons deep inside their own 20 yard line, while he averaged 60 yards per kickoff.
Sundby is 15-of-18 in PATs this season and has hit four-of-five field goals attempted, which includes a perfect four-of-four from inside the 40-yard line. He ranks second in the NSIC with a field goal percentage of .800 and is the league’s fourth-leading kicker netting 6.8 points per contest.
The special teams player of the week laurel is the first of its kind for Sundby and the first of the 2009 campaign for the Bemidji State football team.
The Beavers, who are 3-1 overall and 2-1 in NSIC play this season, travel to Aberdeen, S.D. Saturday to battle NSIC foe Northern State University. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. from Swisher Field.
