[recap][stats] |
Until 2:26 to play in the fourth quarter, Bemidji State and Northern State appeared to be sticking to their tried-and-true football formula from the previous four seasons: Northern State jumps out to a big early lead, the Beavers rally in the third quarter, then the teams duel back-and-forth in the fourth with BSU pulling out a victory by less than a touchdown in the game’s waning minutes.
[recap][stats] |
The Bemidji State Beavers enter the stretch run of their 2004 season with an historic goal squarely in their sights - the first post-season bowl game in school history. BSU controls its own destiny for a top-two finish in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, and with Winona State apparently in the driver’s seat for an NCAA Playoff berth a second-place NSIC finish would land Bemidji State in the Mineral Water Bowl on Dec. 6, 2003 against a representative from the Midwest Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
Standing in BSU’s path are three consecutive road games to close out the 2004 regular season, beginning with this weekend’s contest at Northern State. The Wolves are 3-4 and 2-2 in the NSIC after being picked third in the NSIC pre-season polls.
Pre-game notes [556k PDF] |
Bemidji State picked up its sixth consecutive win over Minnesota Crookston, secured the 53rd career victory for head coach Jeff Tesch and assured the BSU program its school-record seventh consecutive winning season, downing the Golden Eagles 28-20 this afternoon. But the victory did not come easy, as the Golden Eagles fought back from a 28-7 fourth-quarter defecit by scoring the game’s final 13 points, and held the ball in the game’s final minute before turning it over on downs to end the rally, and the contest, with 39 seconds to play in regulation.
[recap][stats] |
The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship hopes for Bemidji State (5-2 / 2-1 NSIC) suffered a bump last weekend with a loss to Winona State, but the Beavers can remain in the hunt with a successful run to close the season. BSU starts that four-game sprint with Minnesota-Crookston (1-5 / 1-2 NSIC) in its 2004 home finale, Oct. 16. The Golden Eagles have just a single victory this season against five losses, but that victory was an impressive 24-0 shutout of NSIC rival Wayne State (Neb.) in the league opener for both squads. Still, that win represents the only time in six starts this year the Golden Eagles have scored more than 14 points.
Pre-game notes [556k PDF] |
In a battle of the final two unbeaten teams in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, the Bemidji State Beavers could not overcome a huge afternoon from Winona State senior quarterback Brian Wrobel, who led the Warriors to a 41-28 victory with a career performance.

It isn’t likely there could be much more on the line when Bemidji State (5-1 / 2-0 NSIC) plays host to the Winona State Warriors (5-1 / 2-0 NSIC) in a pivotal Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference battle which could well be one of the biggest home games in Bemidji State’s history. With the Beavers and Warriors entering the contest as the lone unbeaten teams in NSIC play, the victor will control its own destiny for the 2004 conference championshp - a crown Bemidji State has worn just four times in its history, and not since 1959.
