results] The Bemidji State University men’s golf
team posted a 322 third and round in the 2005 NCAA Division
II Central/Great Lakes Super Regional Wednesday at the par-71
St. Joseph Country Club in St. Joseph, Mo. The Beavers' +38
final round caused them to slide back into a tie with Truman
State University for seventh with a three-round total of 322-307-321=950
(+98). Allen Zutz (Sr., Red Lake Falls, Minn.) led
BSU on the third day of competition shooting a four-over 75
but it was freshman Neil Rude (White Bear
Lake, Minn.) who took home top honors for the Beavers finishing
in a tie for 13th place after carding 79-72-78=229 (+16) in
the 54-hole event.
Washburn University held off a highly competitive pack to
capture the Central Regional Championship and an birth in
the NCAA Division II Championship May 17-20 at The Club at
Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Georgia. WU fished the event
carding three of the top five rounds in the region as it pushed
toward a 16-stroke lead during the final day of competition
(298-294-298=890, +38).
Just four strokes separated second place from fourth with
Missouri Southern State University reaping the benefits of
a plus-17, 301 Wednesday to grab a hold of second place (298-307-301=609,
+58). Fellow member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference,
Winona State University, also carded a 301 as a team in the
final round to sneak past Central Missouri State University
and Missouri Western State University for a third place finish
(299-307-301=907, +59)
After shooting day two's best individual round (69), defending
Central/Great Lakes Super Regional Champion Brice Garrett
(Missouri Western State) fired a two-over par 73 to take individual
medallist honors with a three-round total of 72-69-73=214
(+1). In addition, Garrett qualifies for a trip to national
finals as an individual.
For BSU, Zutz's four-over-par 75 propelled him up four spots
into 37th place Wednesday (79-87-75=241, +28). Toby
Palmiscno (Sr., Grand Forks, N.D.) was just two shots
behind locked in a tie for 38th place (78-79-86=243, +30).
In 41st place, Matt Gorden (Sr., Detroit
Lakes, Minn.) posted a three-round total of 86-75-85=246 (+33)
and Hiraku Aoki (So., Akita, Japan) rounded
out BSU's competitors in 42nd spot after a day two score of
251 (87-81-83, +38).
BSU caps off its 2005 campaign with its second consecutive
trip to the super regional. The Beavers shaved 15 strokes
off their 2004 performance at the event to equal the school's
top post-season finish (seventh) under the current tournament
format.
In the Great Lakes Regional, also hosted by St. Joseph Country
Club, Northern Kentucky University posted a three-day total
of 293-297-301=891 (+39) to gain is second consecutive regional
championship and a spot in the NCAA Division II Championship.
