BEMIDJI, Minn. -- [complete
results] On the shoulders of a +2, 74 (41-33) second-place
finish from newcomer Clint Cornell, the Bemidji
State University men’s golf team opened the 2005 fall
campaign in style. The Beavers captured first place, defeating
its nearest competitor, University of Manitoba I and II (309)
by four strokes posting a team total of 305.
Cornell shot a 44 on the front nine, but would torch the back
nine for 33 vaulting up the leader board and into second place
behind only Concordia College-Moorhead’s Josh Wahlin
(36-37=73). His blistering 33 on the back nine paced all participating
athletes.
Also placing well for the BSU I squad was Neil Rude
who finished just one shot behind Cornell (39-36=75) tied
for fifth place. Newcomer Mike Abrahamson
(39-39=78) and senior Al Zutz (42-36=78)
rounded out BSU’s top four locked in a tie for 17th
with a +6, 78.
The Bemidji State II team posted a 321 to slide into ninth
place. Tyler Hirth paced that team shooting a +3, 75 (35-40)
finishing in a tie with Rude and six others in fifth as an
individual.
The Bemidji State I team finished atop a field of 13 teams
including teams made up of athletes from North Dakota State
University, University of North Dakota and a pair of teams
from Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe university
of Minnesota-Crookston.
The Beavers will return home to host their annual Bemidji
State Invitational Sunday and Monday (Sept. 11-12) at the
Bemidji Town and Country Club. Athletes will begin teeing
off from hole one Sunday at 11 a.m. and will hit the course
for a shotgun start of 8:30 a.m. Monday for the event’s
final round.
