BECKER, Minn. -- [Rounds
1-2] Thirty-six holes into the 72-hole 2006-07 Northern
Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships at Pebble Creek
Golf Course in Becker, Minn., the Bemidji State University
women's golf team finds itself in sixth place. The team is
led by Jenna Schurman (So., Sauk Centre,
Minn.) who shot her way into a tie for 15th place during the
first two rounds of competition.
Schurman went into the clubhouse Saturday 10 strokes off
the lead, tied with three other participants for tenth place
with an 86 (+14). Sunday the sophomore slid back to 15th dropping
four strokes to finish with 90 for a 36-hole total of 86-90=176.
Teammates Kelsey Kaufman (Fr., Eau Claire,
Wis.) and Jenny Wenlund (Jr., Elk River,
Minn.) also collected 90s on Sunday finishing tied for 25th
(92-90=182) and 34th (98-90=188) respectively. Rounding out
the Beavers' first team effort of the fall campaign was Kayla
Braaten who finished the first half of the event
in 51st place after carding 113-102=215 in her first collegiate
event.
Winona State University currently holds a two-stoke lead
for the top spot at the mid-way point of the event carding
a team total of 342-315=657 to edge out NSIC newcomer Upper
Iowa University (336-323=659). Southwest Minnesota State University
sits in third place (328-341=669), Concordia University-St.
Paul is in fourth (340-331=671) while Minnesota State University,
Moorhead has a nine-shot lead over BSU (389-372=761) for fifth
place.
The Beavers own the slimmest lead over Wayne State College
(398-364=762) for sixth place. University of Mary (N.D.) finished
eighth (382-388=770) while Northern State University rounded
out the field of competition in ninth (406-380=786).
Winona State's Morgan Proshek leads all participants with
a nine-over-par 79-74=153. Erin Oakland, of Southwest Minnesota
State, sits two strokes back (76-79=155) while WSU's Nikki
Wilson is in third after firing a 79-77=156.
The final 36 holes of the unique tournament will be concluded
during the spring season with the team champion earning an
automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. The top eight individual
participants will garner All-NSIC honors.
The event marks the conclusion of the 2006 fall women's golf
season at BSU. The team will rev things back up in March.
