INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Bemidji
State University men's golf team has been selected to compete
in the 2007 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Super Regionals, the
NCAA recently announced. BSU will participate in the Central/Great
Lakes Super Regional scheduled for May 7-9 at the Twin Hills
Golf and Country Club in Joplin, Missouri.
BSU is one of 80 teams and 50 individuals across the country
in postseason play this spring. Each of the five regionals
combine two geographical areas with eight teams to make up
the 16-team, 10-individual super regional. The Central/Great
Lakes Regional event will be hosted by Missouri Southern State
University.
BSU comes into the super regional ranked fifth in the Central
Region seated one spot above Winona State University, the
only other Northern SUn intercollegiate Conference institution
to receive an invitation this season. Two individuals from
the University of Minnesota, Crooks ton and from Upper Iowa
University have also been invited and will represent the NSIC
in the event.
The top team from each region within the super regional and
the top individuals not with a team from each super regional
(regardless of region) will advance to the finals May May
22-25 at The Meadows in Allendale, Michigan. The NCAA Division
II Men's Golf National Championship will be hosted by Grand
Valley State University. Ten additional teams will earn berths
to the finals. These teams will be determined based on the
previous three-year average of top-10 finishes of a super
regional at the finals.
The University of South Carolina at Aiken won their third
NCAA Division II men’s golf title in 2006 at The Resort
at Glade Springs in Daniels, West Virginia. The Pacers posted
a 12-stroke victory after a close battle with league rival
Columbus State University while St. Mary’s University
junior Jamie Amoretti won the individual title finishing at
even-par 280 for the 72-hole event. South Carolina-Aiken’s
Dane Burkhart finished a stroke back at one-over in his bid
for a repeat title and Greg Koch from Florida Southern College
was third at 282.
Last season the BSU golf team made its third consecutive appearance
in postseason play after failing to make a single appearance
since the current format began in 1963.
