JOPLIN, Mo. - With 36 holes of the 54-hole NCAA Division
II Central Great Lakes Super Regional in the books, the Bemidji
State University men's golf team sits in sixth place at +40.
BSU sophomore Mitch Mackedanz (Paynesville,
Minn.) carded a two-over-par 74 on day two to clime into a
tie for sixth place and pace the Beaver contingent.
Just a day after posting a team-best 75 (+3), Mackedanz did
himself one better finishing his second round of the event
at +2 (74) for a two-day total of 149 (+5).
Mackedanz began the day with a birdie on hole 10, but dropped
three strokes on a three-hole stretch, from 13 to 15, when
he posted a bogey on each hole. He finished the back nine
at three-over-par after failing to convert a par putt on 18.
But the sophomore came back on the front nine recording a
pair of birdies among six even holes and a single bogey.
After two days, the Beavers are 33 shots off the lead in
sixth place (616) but are just three strokes behind fifth
place Missouri Western State University (613) and now own
a 14-stroke lead over seventh place Truman State University
(630).
Washburn University fired a team total of 289 (+1) on the
second day to increase its lead over the rest of the field
to 10 shots. The Ichabods head into the final day of the super
regional at seven-over-par for the tournament (538). Washburn's
Ryan Deutsch carded his second consecutive 70 to go to our-under-par
for the tournament (140) He leads second place Tommy Clifford
of Missouri Southern State University by four strokes.
Fellow Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference member Winona
State University struggled in the second round dropping out
of second place and into fourth with a +15 303 for a two-day
total of 600 (+24).
Round three of the 54-hole tournament is slated to begin
at 8 a.m. tomorrow. BSU's Jeff Peltier (Sr.,
Grand Rapids, Minn.) will be the first Beaver to tee off when
he steps onto the No. 1 tee box at 8:45 a.m. Mackedanz is
next at 8:54 a.m., with Michael Abrahamson (So.,
Duluth, Minn.), Clint Cornell (So., Grand
Rapids, Minn.) and Neil Rude (Jr., White
Bear Lake, Minn.) following at nine minute intervals.
The top team from each region within the super regional and
the top individuals not with a team from each super regional
(regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 22-25
at The Meadows in Allendale, Michigan. The NCAA Division II
Men's Golf National Championship will be hosted by Grand Valley
State University. Ten additional teams will earn berths to
the finals. These teams will be determined based on the previous
three-year average of top-10 finishes of a super regional
at the finals.
The University of South Carolina at Aiken won their third
NCAA Division II men’s golf title in 2006 at The Resort
at Glade Springs in Daniels, West Virginia. The Pacers posted
a 12-stroke victory after a close battle with league rival
Columbus State University while St. Mary’s University
junior Jamie Amoretti won the individual title finishing at
even-par 280 for the 72-hole event. South Carolina-Aiken’s
Dane Burkhart finished a stroke back at one-over in his bid
for a repeat title and Greg Koch from Florida Southern College
was third at 282.
Bemidji State’s participation in the 2007 super regional
marks the fourth consecutive season in which the Beavers have
received an invitation for postseason play.
