Bemidji State takes sixth at NCAA Division II Super Regional
Rude cards even 72 on final day to move into 14th place

May 9, 2007

JOPLIN, Mo.
- The Bemidji State University men's golf team fired its best round of the 2007 NCAA Division II Central/Great Lakes Super Regional Wednesday carding a 302 but it was not enough to make a move on the leader board. The Beavers finished the 54-hole event at Twin Hills Golf and Country Club in Joplin, Mo. in sixth place.

The Beavers' surge was due in part to the play of Neil Rude (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Clint Cornell (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.) the pair each carded an even 72. Rude's performance enabled him to leapfrog teammate Mitch Mackedanz (So., Paynesville, Minn.), who had led the BSU squad for the first 36 holes, and into a tie for 14th place over all with a 76-78-72--226 (+10). Cornell came in right on the heels of Mackedanz, who took 16th (75-74-78--227), knotted in a tie for 19th with 78-79-72--29 (+13).

Bemidji State finished the three-day tournament 40 shots off the pace set by Central Region Champion Washburn University (294-298-295--878, +14) piling up a team total of 306-310-302--918 (+54).

Fellow Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference member Winona State University capped the event in fourth place (297-303-301--901, +37) while University of Minnesota, Crookston individuals, Steven Busho and Kyle Peterson finished in eighth and 20th places respectively.

BSU was one of 80 teams and 50 individuals across the country in postseason play this spring. Each of the five regionals combine two geographical areas with eight teams to make up the 16-team, 10-individual super regional. The Central/Great Lakes Regional event was hosted by Missouri Southern State University.

Earning regional titles today, Washburn and Ferris State University, out of the Great Lakes Regional, move on to the finals, May 22-25 at The Meadows in Allendale, Michigan. The NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship will be hosted by Grand Valley State University. Ten additional teams will earn berths to the finals. These teams will be determined based on the previous three-year average of top-10 finishes of a super regional at the finals.

The University of South Carolina at Aiken won their third NCAA Division II men’s golf title in 2006 at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, West Virginia. The Pacers posted a 12-stroke victory after a close battle with league rival Columbus State University while St. Mary’s University junior Jamie Amoretti won the individual title finishing at even-par 280 for the 72-hole event. South Carolina-Aiken’s Dane Burkhart finished a stroke back at one-over in his bid for a repeat title and Greg Koch from Florida Southern College was third at 282.

The sixth place finish marks the end of the 2007 spring golf season for Bemidji State. The Beavers participation in the super regional marks the fourth consecutive season in which the Beavers have received an invitation for postseason play.
