YANKTON, N.D. (Fox River Golf Club) -- The Bemidji
State University women's golf team completed 2006-07 Northern
Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championship play Sunday riding
a 15th place finish by Jenna Schurman (So.,
Sauk Centre, Minn.) to place seventh in the event (389-372-370-379--1510).
Schurman carded an event total of 86-90-87-86--349 to finish
in the 15th spot--the best individual championship for a BSU
student-athlete since Tracy Depew earned 14th place in the
2003 conference championship.
A unique championship tournament, the first two rounds of
the NSIC Women's Golf Championship took place Oct. 7-8 at
Pebble Creek Golf Course in Becker, Minn. The teams reconvened
this weekend to complete the event with two additional rounds
of play.
Upper Iowa University locked up the team championship defeating
second place Winona State University by a mere five strokes
(342-315-317-319--1293) while Concordia University St. Paul
took third place (340-331-323-320--1314).
Defending NSIC champion Southwest Minnesota State University,
winner of the previous six conference crowns, earned fourth
place this season (328-341-324-323--1316) posting a team total
of 341 in last fall's second round that would cause the Mustangs
to fall out of the lead. The team would never recover.
Minnesota State University, Moorhead (375-377-358-349--1459)
took fifth and Wayne State College (398-364-379-365--1506)
edged the Beavers for sixth. Northern State University rounded
the field out in eighth (406-380-381-396--1563) while University
of Mary (N.D.) and the University of Minnesota, Crookston
did not complete the event.
The championship brings an end to the Beavers' 2007 golf season.
Bemidji State did not qualify for an invitation to the NCAA
Division II Regional Tournament.
