Beavers add four players

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State head men's
ice hockey coach Tom Serratore today announced
the signing of four student-athletes to national letters of
intent to join the BSU program. Three will join BSU for the
2002-03 campaign while one will play an additional year of
junior hockey before joining the program for the 2003-04 season.
Signing with Bemidji State are Jean-Guy Gervais (F/RW; Winnipeg,
Manitoba / SJHL-Nipawin), Blaine Jarvis (F; Gladstone, Manitoba
/ MJHL-Neepawa), Myles Kuharski (F; Neepawa, Manitoba / BCHL-Nanaimo)
and Andrew Martens (D; Friendswood, Texas / CJHL-Pembroke).
"We feel this is an excellent recruiting class,"
Serratore said. "This class will add depth to our program
immediately. These kids will compete for jobs right from the
start."
• F/RW Jean-Guy Gervais (Winnipeg,
Manitoba, Canada/born Oct. 2, 1981) captained the 2001-02
edition of the Nipawin Hawks of the Saskatchewan Junior A
Hockey League and was named Team MVP . He was also an SJHL
All-Star selection and SJHL Viking Cup team member. In 2000-01,
Gervais earned SJHL Playoff MVP honors and was nominated for
the All-SHJL Team.
Gervais scored 86 points (35 goals, 51 assists) in 66 games
for Nipawin last year, and also tallied 99 penalty minutes.
Serratore on Gervais: "Jean-Guy is a power forward who
will bring intensity and show up for us night in and night
out. He's a proven leader and could very easily be our captain
some day."
• F Blaine Jarvis (Gladstone,
Manitoba/born May 29, 1984) was named team MVP of the Neepawa
Natives of the Manitoba Junior A Hockey League in 2001-02,
and also won the team +/- award after finishing the season
at +49. He was nominated for the MJHL All-Rookie Team and
Rookie of the Year after winning two MJHL Rookie of the Week
awards.
Jarvis scored 84 points (42 goals, 42 assists) in 64 games
for Neepawa. He also recorded 98 penalty minutes.
Jarvis will play one more year of junior hockey and will
join BSU for the 2003-04 season.
Serratore on Jarvis: "Blaine is a young,
talented forward who comes from the Manitoba Junior League,
which has been very good to BSU. He has great upside as a
player, and will come in after one more year of juniors to
gain strength and maturity on the ice."
• F Myles Kuharski (Neepawa,
Manitoba/born June 3, 1981) won the Jason Gow Memorial Award
last year, given to the most exciting player on the Nanaimo
Clippers of the British Columbia Hockey League. He scored
119 points in 61 games (45 goals, 74 assists) and tallied
114 penalty minutes en route to BCHL All-Star honors and a
spot on the BCHL Viking Cup team.
Serratore on Kuharski: "Kuharski is
the most-skilled forward in our class. He has always scored
a lot of goals. He also ripped up the Manitoba Junior League
for a couple of years. He has tremendous hands and instincts."
• D Andrew Martens (Friendswood,
Texas/born July 5, 1981) was the top-scoring defenseman in
Ontario's Central Junior A Hockey League last year, tallying
63 points (16 goals, 47 assists) in 63 games. He earned the
Best Defenseman on Team and Player of the Week awards for
the Pembroke Lumber Kings, and was a CJHL All-Star and a member
of the CJHL All-League Team.
Martens will sit out the 2002-03 season for playing major-junior
hockey.
Serratore on Martens: "Andrew is a
big, strong offensive defenseman. He has a great shot from
the point and loves to jump into the play."
