MANKATO, Minn. - [box score] Despite only trailing 1-0
after two periods of play, Bemidji State (1-3-0, 0-0-0 CHA)
surrendered three goals to Minnesota State (2-5-1, 0-5-1 WCHA)
in the final stanza, including two power-play scores, which
allowed the Mavericks to record a series sweep of the Beavers
at the Midwest Wireless Civice Center Saturday night. MSU
outscored BSU 8-0 on the weekend and the loss pushes the Beavers
losing streak to three games.
The Mavericks lit up the scoreboard just 1:23 when Austin
Sutter scored what proved to be the game-winning tally for
the home team. Minnesota State held a one-goal advantage until
the beginning of the third frame, at which point the Mavericks
erupted for two goals in span of less than two minutes. Ryan
Carter made the score 2-0 with a power-play marker at 1:56
of the final period, while David Backes put MSU ahead 3-0
at the 2:30 mark with an even-strength score of his own. Joel
Hanson recorded another power-play lamplighter for Minnesota
State at the 12:40 mark of the final frame to solidify a 4-0
blanking and two-game sweep of Bemidji State.
MSU outshot BSU 34-21, including a 25-14 mark in the final
two periods of play.
The Beavers finished the game 0-for-5 with a man advantage,
while the Mavericks staged two goals on five power-play opportunities.
BSU finished the weekend with an 0-for-14 clip on the power-play
and the Green and White have generated just one goal in their
last 25 chances with a man advantage.
Sophomore Layne Sedevie turned away 30 saves in the loss as
compared to Chris Clark who secured 21 saves in his first
start of the 2004-05 campaign for MSU.
The loss dropped BSU to 37-28-12 all-time against Minnesota
State, 1-9-2 since the Beavers made the move to Division I
in 1999. The Mavericks are unbeaten in the last seven meetings
between the two teams, with ties on Nov. 1, 2002, and Oct.
25, 2003.
The Beavers will look to back on track with at home with
a non-conference series with Bentley on Friday, Nov. 5 and
Saturday, Nov. 6 at the John S. Glas Fieldshouse. Opening
face-off is set for 7:35 p.m. Friday and 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
