Climie and Winter earn College Hockey America accolades
Bemidji State garners multiple league awards for second straight week

Nov. 12, 2007

DETROIT - Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey goaltender Matt Climie (Sr., Leduc, Alberta) and junior forward Travis Winter (St. Cloud, Minn.) have been named College Hockey America Players of the Week for their performances in the Beavers' Nov. 9-10 series at Alabama-Huntsville, league office today announced.

BSU's sweep of the offensive and defensive awards marks the second consecutive week the Beavers have garnered both awards following Climie and sophomore forward Joey Moggach's (Brandon, Manitoba) picks a week ago.

Climie, this week's Defensive Player of the Week pick, played in every second (125:00) of the Beavers’ two-game series at Alabama-Huntsville posting a 1-0-1 record. He recorded his ninth career shutout Friday evening turning away 36 shots for a career-high number of saves in a shutout--bettering a mark of 31 set just six days prior to his blanking of UAH. He joins Beaver greats Blaine Comstock (1967-71) and Jim Scanlan (1978-82) atop the Bemidji State career shutouts list (9). He followed that performance stopping 21 of UAH’s 24 shots Saturday en route to a 3-3 tie. He finished the weekend with a 1.44 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage on a total of 57 saves.

The senior is currently riding a three-game unbeaten streak.

The conference honor is the seventh of Climie’s career. He has been named Defensive Player of the Week on three prior occasions (11/13/06,12/18/06, 11/5/07), including once already this season, while he was a rookie of the week pick three times during the 2004-05 campaign (1/10/05, 2/6/05 and 3/7/05).

CHA Offensive Player of the Week, Winter led the Beavers posting 1-2=3 points versus UAH helping Bemidji State to three points in conference play to move BSU into second place in the league standings.

Winter had a hand in each of the Beavers’ two goals Friday night including netting the game-winner, his first of the season, during the second period. He also notched his first assist of 2007-08 later en route to a 2-0 BSU victory over the Chargers. The following night he matched teammate Matt Pope (Langley, British Columbia) with his team-leading fourth goal of the season as the Beavers played UAH to a 3-3 tie. Winter also completed the weekend with a plus/minus rating of +2.

The award marks the second of Winter’s career. He was named CHA Co-Player of the Week Feb. 5, 2007.

Wayne State University's Kyle Funkenhauser was tabbed CHA Rookie of the Week joining Climie and Winter as this week's honorees.

Monday’s selections mark the fourth and fifth of the season for Bemidji State. They follow a pair of picks a week ago and an Oct. 16th Rookie of the Week award garnered by Jamie Ruff (Fr., F. Rochester, Minn.).

Bemidji State 4-5-1 overall and 2-1-1 in CHA play is back on the road this weekend traveling to Detroit, Mich., for a two-game series with Wayne State (Mich.). The league series set for the Michigan State Fairgrounds is scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. start each night.
