DETROIT, Mich. - For the second consecutive week and just the fourth time since the team made the jump to the NCAA Division I level, the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team has swept the College Hockey America weekly Player of the Week awards. The CHA office today announced that, Travis Winter (Jr., C, St. Cloud, Minn.) has been selected Offensive Player of the Week, Davis Deterding (Sr., D, Alexandria, Minn.) earned defensive Player of the Week laurels and for the third time this season and the second consecutive week, Matt Read (Fr., F, Ilderton, Ontario) is the recipient of the Rookie of the Week award.

Winter totaled one goal and two assists on the weekend standing as one of the Beavers to score three points in the series sweep over Alabama-Huntsville. The junior posted a pair of assists, including a helper on Tyler Scofield’s (Jr., F, Prince George British, Columbia) game-winner, Friday as the Beavers earned a 4-1 victory to start the series. Saturday, Winter got the Beavers on the board netting a power-play goal mid-way through the second period. The goal would stand as the game-winner--Winter’s team-leading third of the season. The goal not only extended Winters’ scoring streak to four games, it also vaulted the centerman to the top of the CHA scoring charts (3-6=9).

Deterding earns CHA Defensive Player of the Week honors after captaining a defensive unit that held the Chargers to a BSU Division I era record low 20 shots in the weekend series. The blueliners allowed just eight shots on net Friday--to match a BSU record low set Jan. 14, 2005 versus Robert Morris University and just 12 more Saturday--a total that ranks fourth on BSU’s D-I charts. In all, the corps was credited with 21 blocks in the series with two attributed to Deterding. The captain also spearheaded a penalty kill unit that successfully killed off all 11 of UAH’s power-play opportunities.

Read not only increased his grip on the CHA rookie scoring charts netting 1-2=3 points in the Beavers’ series sweep, he also made a charge to the top of the league scoring charts. The freshman scored a third-period power-play goal in the Beavers’ 4-1 victory over UAH Friday also adding a helper on BSU’s final goal of the contest. Saturday, he pitched in on Winter’s game-winning goal to match teammate Joey Moggach for the team lead with seven assists.

The CHA Offensive Player of the Week award is the second such award of the season for Winter and marks the third time of his career that he has been the focal point of the weekly CHA award. The junior also garnered the award Nov. 12th after a three-point weekend at Alabama-Huntsville. For Deterding, the Defensive Player of the Week award marks the first of the senior’s career. Read was previously named CHA Rookie of the Week Nov. 19 after a three-point conference series at Wayne State (Mich.) and Dec. 3 after netting three points in a three-point weekend at Niagara.

Monday’s selections mark the 11th, 12th and 13th of the season for Bemidji State. Just nine weeks into the 2007-08 campaign, the Beavers have matched their total of 13 CHA awards won during the entire 2006-07 season.

BSU has garnered at least two player of the week selections for each week it was in action since the first week of November.

The Beavers, 8-6-2 overall and 6-2-2 in CHA play, will take a break from CHA play to host Minnesota State University Dec. 14-15 marking the continuation of a series that got its start in 1974. The puck is set to drop at 7:35 p.m. Friday and at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at the John S. Glas Fieldhouse.
