NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. -- Bemidji State University junior forward Matt Read (Ilderton, Ontario) and freshman linemate Jordan George (Verona, Wis.) have been selected Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively by College Hockey America (CHA). League officials made the announcement today for roles the duo played in the Beavers’ season-opening series sweep over the 2009 NCAA regional finalist United States Air Force Academy.
Read opened the 2009-10 season with a bang, recording five points to lead to the sweep. The junior chipped in an assist on Ian Lowe’s (Jr., F, Bradwardine, Manitoba) game winner in Friday’s 3-1 season-opening win and posted a career-high four points on two goals, which included the game-winning marker, and two assists in a 7-3 rout in the series finale. He finished the weekend with a plus-three plus/minus ranking and appears among the nation’s top five scorers at 2.5 points per game.
George posted two points in his collegiate debut weekend. He joined Read contributing an assist on the game-winner Friday, while potting a rebound for a power-play goal--the first of his BSU career--in the victory Saturday, sealing the win and the series sweep over Air Force.
The award marks the fifth occasion Read has been honored by the league with a weekly award, while it is the first of George’s career.
Along with the Bemidji State pair, the CHA also recognized University of Alabama-Huntsville’s Cameron Talbot as its Defensive Player of the Week.
The 2-0-0 Beavers’ next action comes Oct. 23-24 when they travel to Michigan’s upper peninsula for their first ever clash with Northern Michigan University. Both games in the series are scheduled for 6:35 p.m. starts from the Wildcats’ Berry Events Center in Marquette, Mich.
