Tieranta spent four years with Ilves Tampere playing with fellow BSU freshman Juha Keinänen, splitting time between the Finnish Junior A, Junior B and Junior A-I leagues. He played 39 games for Ilves in the Junior A league in 2004-05, recording 4-17-21 points with 35 penalty minutes.
He scored 4-0=4 points in 35 games with Ilves in 2003-04. In 2002-03, he had 5-5=10 points in 28 games with the Junior B team and had a goal in his only game with the A-I team. He scored 1-5=6 points in 21 games with the Junior B team in 2001-02.
Tieranta helped lead Team Finland to a fifth-place finish at the 2005 World Junior Championship played in Grand Forks, N.D. and Thief River Falls, Minn. He played six games during the Championship and recorded two penalty minutes.
