Bemidji State skates to 5-5 draw with Union College

OCT 26, 2002
BEMIDJI, Minn. - [box score] Bemidji State played its school-record fourth consecutive overtime contest, as Wade Chiodo’s second goal of the game at 9:37 of the third period evened the score in an eventual 5-5 draw with the Union College Dutchmen.

The teams played a wild, physical contest that saw the clubs combine for 19 penalties for 49 minutes. Union’s Marc Neron was ejected in the first period after drawing a butt-ending major, and BSU captain Bryce Methven drew a career-high five penalties for 10 minutes. Six of the 10 goals in the game came on the power-play, with BSU going 4-for-9 and Union capitalizing on four of six extra-man opportunities.

BSU held one-goal leads on three occasions in the game, at 2-1, 3-2 and 4-3, but back-to-back Dutchman lamp-lighters by Jordan Webb (6:29/3rd, power play) and Joel Beal (8:26/3rd) put Union College ahead 5-4. But Chiodo needed just 1:11 to respond and even the score at 5-5 with the eventual game-tying goal.

Chiodo scored a career-high 2-2=4 points for BSU and scored a career-high two goals. Anders Olsson scored three assists, the most by a BSU defenseman since Clay Simmons had three against Findlay on Nov. 22, 1999. Bryce Methven added two assists, and Riley Riddell had a goal and assist.

“We put up 63 shots tonight and 42 last night. What can you do?” asked BSU head coach Tom Serratore. “We launched off over 100 shots tonight and all we get is one point out of it. We had one bad period this weekend and had five great periods of play. I am proud of our effort and we are playing some very exciting hockey.”

The loss extends BSU’s winless streak to 12 games, dating back to last season. It is the second-longest winless streak in school history, trailing only an 15-game winless streak (0-13-2) from Nov. 26, 2000 to Feb. 9, 2001. BSU’s last victory came Feb. 8, 2002 in a 5-1 win at Air Force.

BSU became the first Division I men’s ice hockey team to play four consecutive overtime games since Harvard in 2001-02. The Crimson closed that season with four overtime games, including two double-overtime games, from March 9-23, 2002.

Union goalie Kris Mayotte saved a school-record 58 shots for the Dutchmen to earn the tie. He faced 63 BSU shots in the game. Dannie Morgan went the distance for BSU; he saved 15 of 20 shots faced and earned his career-high second tie of the season.

Kris Goodjohn had a goal and two assists for Union College; Joel Beal and Jordan Webb each had a goal and an assist and Jason Kean had two assists.

The draw leaves BSU at 0-1-3 on the season, leaving the Beavers winless in the first four games of a season for just the third time in the program’s history. BSU started 0-4-0 in its inaugural 1947-48 season and 0-10-0 in 1999-00. Union College saw its record move to 2-1-2 on the season. Next action for BSU comes Nov. 1-2 when the Beavers travel south to tackle Western Collegiate Hockey Association member Minn. State-Mankato for a two-game series. Opening face-offs from the Midwest Wireless Civic Center are scheduled for 7:35 p.m. and 7:05 p.m., respectively.
