Beavers have gone into overtime in
each of five games played this season
NOV. 1, 2002
MANKATO, Minn. - [box
score] At this point, all Bemidji State is asking is that
a game be completed in regulation. The Beavers went into overtime
for the fifth time in five starts in 2002-03, skating to a
1-1 tie with the Minnesota State-Mankato Mavericks tonight
at the Midwest Wireless Civic Center.
Both goals scored in the game came on the power-play. BSU
picked up its tally just 1:11 into the contest, as Peter Jonsson
netted his first career goal with helpers from Andrew Murray
and Marty Goulet.
Shane Joseph evened the score for the Mavericks at 10:28 of
the second with the eventual game-tying goal.
BSU got a strong effort in goal from freshman Kelly Shields,
making his second career start. He saved a career-high 28
shots in a 65:00 complete game, including a save on his only
shot faced in overtime. He evenly duelled Mankato’s
Jason Jensen, who saved 20 of 21 shots faced in a complete
game for the Mavericks. Shields saw his record move to 0-1-1
for the season and earned third-star honors for his efforts.
The tie extended BSU’s winless streak to 13 games,
continuing the second-longest winless streak in school history.
The Beavers have not won a game since a 5-1 win over Air Force
on Feb. 8, 2002. The BSU record for consecutive games without
a win is 15 (0-13-2), set from Nov. 26, 2000 to Feb. 9, 2001.
BSU has skated to four ties this year, already just one shy
of its total for all of 2001-02 and tied for third-most in
a single season in school history. BSU’s single-season
record for draws is five, set last year (12-18-5) and in 1991-92
(16-9-5).
The draw leaves BSU at 0-1-4 on the season, leaving the Beavers
winless in the first five games of a season for just the second
time in the program’s history. BSU started 0-10-0 in
2000-’01. MSU-Mankato saw its record move to 0-3-2 on
the season and has now played three consecutive overtime games
of its own. The teams wrap up their two-game non-conference
series tomorrow night at the Midwest Wireless Civic Center.
Opening face-off is slated for 7:05 p.m. Central time.
