Bemidji State winless streak vs Mavericks reaches six

MANKATO, Minn. (Midwest Wireless Civic Center) - [stats] - Bemidji State was shut out by Minnesota State for the first time since 1988, as three Maverick power-play goals helped lead MSU over the Beavers, 4-0.

The shutout snapped BSU’s Division I-era record of 60 consecutive games with a goal scored, dating back to a 12-0 loss to Minn.-Duluth on Dec. 7, 2002.

BSU went 0-for-9 on the power-play, while Minnesota State converted on three of seven opportunities and scored one power-play goal in each period of the contest.

David Backes scored the game’s first goal for the hosts, taking advantage of a slashing penalty on BSU sophomore Shane Holman (Hibbing, Minn.) at 5:26 of the first period. With just six seconds remaining on the power-play, Backes took a helper from Travis Morin and put the Mavericks on the board with what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Austin Sutter scored even-strength for the Mavericks 4:42 later, taking a pass from Kyle Peto to put MSU ahead 2-0 at 12:02 of the period.

The two first-period lamp-lighters were more than the hosts would need, as the Mavericks rode a 34-save shutout from Jon Volp. The Maverick senior saved eight shots in the first period and 13 each in the second and third to record the first Minnesota State shutout since an 0-0 draw with Michigan Tech on Nov. 14, 2003.

Morin scored Minnesota State’s third goal of the game on the power-play at 10:47 of the second following a holding call on Chris Nathe (Elk River, Minn.), and Jake Brenk lit the lamps on the power-play after a Luke Erickson (Roseau, Minn.) high-sticking call at 8:51 of the third to wrap up scoring for the game.

Layne Sedevie (Bismarck, N.D.) went the distance for BSU and allowed all four goals against 35 saves. The 35 saves for Sedevie were just two shy of his career high of 37, set at Minnesota on Feb. 7, 2003. He took the loss and fell to 1-2-0 on the year.

The 0-for-9 performance with the man advantage dropped BSU to 1-for-20 on the power play in its last two games.

The loss dropped BSU to 37-27-12 all-time against Minnesota State, 1-8-2 since the Beavers moved to Division I in 1999. The Mavericks are unbeaten in the last six meetings in the series, with ties on Nov. 1, 2002 and in the last meeting on Oct. 25, 2003. BSU has not won a game in Mankato since Dec. 19, 1996 (W, 6-2).

Bemidji State sees its season record fall to 1-2-0 with the loss, while Minnesota State earns its first win of the season to improve to 1-5-1. BSU and MSU wrap up their two-game non-conference series tomorrow evening, with opening face-off slated for 7:07 p.m. Central time at the Midwest Wireless Civic Center.
