Bemidji State Blanks Wayne State in 200th Division I Game
BSU Goaltender Matt Clime Nets Second Career Shutout

BEMIDJI, Minn. (John S. Glas Fieldhouse) - Since the 1998-99 season the
Bemidji State University men’s hockey team has logged 199 games at the
Division I level, tonight the Beavers gained a win in their 200th contest
utilizing a balanced scoring attack, a strong penalty-kill effort and
outstanding goal tending. Six Bemidji State University players recorded a
point while freshman goaltender Matt Clime (LeDuc, Alberta) recorded his
second career shut out as Bemidji State took the first of a two-game series
from Wayne State University 2-0 Friday in front of 1,198 at the john Glas
Fieldhouse.

BSU came out of the gates strong taking a 1-0 lead just 3:29 into the first
period. Junior Lou Garritan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded his fourth goal of
the season as Jake Bluhm and John Haider were each credited with an assist
on the play. The goal would turn out to be all BSU would need as Clime
would turn away all 13 of the Warriors’ shots managed to get on goal.
“Our goalies are playing with a lot confidence right now,” said BSU head
coach Tom Serratore. “Anytime a goalie can get a goose egg its good for him
and good for our defense.”

Beavers captain Andrew Murray (Selkirk, Manitoba) returned from missing the
team’s last two games due to an injury suffered in the Alabama-Huntsville
series Jan. 22nd, icing the game for BSU by netting his 13th goal of the
season on a pass from Brendan Cook (Reston, Manitoba) and Nathan
Schwartzbauer
(Wasilla, Alaska). Cook’s assist not only kept him atop the
BSU scoring charts with 15 goals and 15 assists for 30 points it also took
him one step closer to becoming the third BSU player to eclipse the
100-point plateau giving him 50 goals and 42 assists for 92 total points.
He would follow Marty Goulet (47-53=100) and line mate Murray (43-67=110)
who moved into a tie for 34th on BSU’s all-time scoring list.

For the game, the Beavers out-shot Wayne State by a 37-13 margin. BSU’s
constant pressure allowed only eight Warrior shots in the first period and
then just two and three in the final two periods respectively.

Allowing just two shots in the second stanza was especially impressive
considering the Beavers spent 8:09 of the period playing a man short.
In all the BSU penalty-killing until allowed just five WSU power-play shots
while holding the Warriors scoreless in seven power-play opportunities.

“Tonight our puck pursuit and penalty-kill were outstanding. That’s just
good Beaver hockey,” stated Serratore. But mentioned some concerns about
the production from his own power-play unit after it has failed to
manufacture a goal during the last two games spanning 11 power-play
opportunities. “Our power-play unit has hit the wall in the last couple
games.” He added. “We really need to get them going.”

The win brings Bemidji State to 15-9-1, 10-3-0 in CHA play, and stays ahead
of the rest of the College Hockey America field in the standings. Wayne
State falls to 12-13-2, 5-6-2 in CHA play. The teams will meet again
tomorrow night in the John S. Glas Fieldhouse. Opening face-off is scheduled
for 7:05 p.m. Central time.
