Beavers surrender two power-play goals in crucial three-minute span in second period
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (Ewigleben Arena) - The Ferris State Bulldogs scored two power-play goals in a span of 3:07 at the end of the second period, sparking a run of five unanswered goals to blow open a 1-1 tie and send Bemidji State to a 6-1 non-conference men’s hockey defeat tonight.
The five-goal margin of defeat marks BSU’s worst loss since Oct. 23, 2005 - a 7-2 loss to Ferris State in Bemidji.
Bemidji State, which entered the contest ranked fourth in the nation in scoring, was held to a season-low one goal, its lowest single-game scoring output since a 4-1 loss to Minn.-Duluth on Feb. 25, 2005.
Ferris State scored 26 seconds into the contest, as Zac Pearson picked up his third goal of the season off the opening face off from Adam Miller.
BSU’s Rob Sirianni (Edmonton, Alberta) tied the score at 10:48 of the first, picking up an unassisted marker, his 25th career goal.
After Sirianni’s goal, the Beavers were never in the game.
Mark Bomersback took advantage of an interference penalty against David Deterding (Alexandria, MInn.) at 16:42 of the second, putting Ferris State on top for good, 2-1. The power-play goal snapped BSU’s streak of consecutive penalties killed at 27, and was the first power-play goal allowed by BSU since 19:24 of the second period at Air Force on Oct. 28 - a span of 240 minutes.
From there, BSU fell apart. Jake Bluhm (Red Wing, Minn.) was issued a five-minute major penalty for checking from behind and disqualified, and the Bulldogs scored 1:20 into the five-minute power play to grab a two-goal lead and essentially put the game away.
The Bulldogs added three goals in the final period to complete the 6-1 victory. Corey Couturier and Nick Scheible had a goal and an assist each during the third period, leading a group of four Bulldogs with multiple points in the contest.
Sophomore goaltender Matt Climie (Leduc, Alberta) took the loss for Bemidji State, falling to 3-2-0 on the season and suffering his second loss in three starts. He allowed all six Ferris State goals, marking a season high for goals allowed in a game and just the second time in 26 career starts. Climie saved 23 shots on the evening,
Derek MacIntyre saved 25 of 26 shots faced, including 17-for-17 in the second and third periods, to earn the victory for the hosts. He evened his season mark at 1-1-0 with the victory.
Senior forward Jean-Guy Gervais (Winnipeg, Manitoba) was called for two minor roughing penalties at 15:14 of the third period, his 78th and 79th career penalties which gave him the BSU career Division I-era record.
Bemidji State falls to 2-5 in seven all-time meetings with Ferris State, including 1-4 at Ewigleben Arena. BSU is 4-12 in its Division I era against Central Collegiate Hockey Association foes.
The teams combined for 23 penalties for 68 minutes - 13 for 37 against Bemidji State. BSU’s 13 penalties tie a season high, set on two previous occasions, and mark the sixth time in BSU’s last eight games it has drawn 10 or more penalties.
BSU went 0-for-6 on the power play, while Ferris State went 3-for-10. FSU’s three power-play goals are tied for fifth-most by a BSU opponent in its Division I era, while its 10 power-play chances are tied for fourth-most by a BSU Division I-era foe.
The loss dropped Bemidji State to 7-2-0 on the season, while Ferris State improved to 5-2-4. The teams wrap up their two-game series tomorrow with a 5:05 Eastern time face-off tomorrow in Big Rapids, Mich.
