Rob Sirianni scores both Beaver goals in exhibition victory
BEMIDJI, Minn. (John Glas Fieldhouse) - Rob Sirianni (Edmonton, Alberta) scored two first-period goals and Orlando Alamano (Fresno, Calif.) to lead the Bemidji State Beavers past the Regina Cougars, 2-0, in an exhibition men’s hockey contest.
Sirianni got BSU on the board early in the first period, using a stop-and-go move to stay onsides at the Regina blue line while taking a pass from Cody Bostock (Salmon Arm, British Columbia). He skated in and flipped a shot over the shoulder of Regina goaltender Adam Ward, and the puck snuck under the crossbar to give BSU a 1-0 lead at 16:59 of the first period.
Sirianni put BSU on top 2-0 just over five minutes later. He and Ryan Miller (Fergus Falls, Minn.) played give-and-go in front of Ward, who committed to Miller on his right. Miller passed across the crease to Sirianni, who pushed the puck home at 11:37 and gave the Beavers a two-goal cushion. Tyler Scofield (Prince George, British Columbia) also assisted on the play.
The 2-0 lead held through the end of the second period. BSU held an 11-6 shot advantage in the second period and had two shots, but failed to score, on its first power-play opportunity of the game after Regina’s Ryan Cruse was called for holding at 15:26.
The teams also played a scoreless third period, with BSU outshooting the Cougars 9-4.
Tonight marked Alamano’s third career appearance in goal in an exhibition game for the Beavers, but he was starting for the first time in a BSU uniform. Alamano saved all 17 Regina shots he faced, with seven saves in the first period, six in the second and four in the third.
Ward took the loss for Regina. He saved 24 of 26 shots faced, including 11-of-11 in the second period and 9-of-9 in the third.
Regina went 0-for-4 on the power play while BSU went 0-for-3. The Beavers out-shot the Cougars, 26-17.
Bemidji State (0-2-0 / 0-0-0 CHA) and Regina (4-6 / 2-4 Canada West) wrap up their two-game exhibition series tomorrow night at Bemidji State’s John S. Glas Fieldhouse. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. Central time.
