Luke Erikson passes Andrew Murrary for BSU’s career Division I-era scoring lead

DETROIT, Mich. (Michigan State Fairgrounds) - Bemidji State’s Luke Erickson (Roseau, Minn.) picked up two first period goals to lead the Beavers to 4-2 victory over the Wayne State Warriors tonight in a College Hockey America contest. Luke Erickson took over sole possession of BSU’s career Division I-era score mark, previously held by Andrew Murray, with his first goal on the night. With the two goals Erikson now has 117 career points scored.

It took Bemidji State just over five minute into the first period to score the games first goal. Luke Erickson put the Beavers up 1-0 on his ninth goal of the season at 5:23 of the period. Cody Bostock (Salmon Arm, British Columbia) and Travis Winter (St. Cloud, Minn.) picked up the helpers on Erickson’s ninth goal of the season.

Erickson would strike again late in the first period on the penalty kill. Erickson would push the Beaver lead to 2-0, scoring BSU’s fifth-short handed goal of the season and the first short-handed goal of his career. Chris Peluso (Wadena, Minn.) and Blaine Jarvis (Gladstone, Manitoba) would pick up the assists on Bemidji State’s second goal of the night.

The Beavers would once again capitalize on the penalty kill in the second period. At 1:01 of the second period Matt Pope (Langley, British Columbia) would net Bemidji State’s second short-handed goal of the game and sixth of the season to increase the Bemidji State lead to 3-0. This was Pope’s first short-handed goal of his career. Helping on Pope’s short-handed goal was Tyler Lehrke (Park Rapids, Minn.) and Riley Weselowski (Pilot Mound, Manitoba). Lehrke’s assist was his first collegiate point wearing a Bemidji State uniform.

Bryan Olds was called for hooking at 3:49 of the second period, and that penalty allowed Bemidji State to push its lead to 4-0. With assists from John Vadnais (Stillwater, Minn.) and Chris Peluso (Wadena, Minn.), Ryan Miller (Fergus Falls, Minn.) picked up his second goal on the season at 3:49 of the period.
Miller’s goal chased Wayne State goaltender Brett Bothwell from the game and Bothwell was replaced by Will Hooper in net at 4:42 of the second period.

Riley Weselowski (Pilot Mound, Manitoba) was called for interference at 10:53 of the period and this allowed Wayne State to break up the shutout. With assists from Ryan Bernardi and Jeff Caister, Derek Bachynski would score his fourth goal of the season at 12:47 to get the Warriors back with in a three goal deficit.

Wayne State showed that it could also score on the penalty kill. At 16:32 of the second period Matt Krug scored a short-handed goal for his second goal of the season to bring the Warriors to with in 4-2. Helping on Krug’s goal was Derek Bachynski and Jason Baclig.

The third period saw Wayne State get all the scoring opportunities as the Warriors out shot Bemidji State 6-to-0 in the final frame. Bemidji State goaltender Matt Climie (Leduc, Alberta) stopped all six shots to complete a 4-2 victory and a weekend series split over the Wayne State Warriors.

This was the first series sweep in Conference Hockey America action this season for the Beavers.
Clime saved 29 of 31 shots faced in 60:00 of work. With the victory Climie improves to 4-2-3 on the season.

Brett Bothwell picked up the loss for the Warriors stopping 10 of 14 shots faced in 24:42 of work dropping him to 3-5-0 on the season. Will Hooper didn’t have to make any saves in 34:02 minutes of work in his relief appearance.

Bemidji State moved to 5-4-3 overall with tonight’s win and 3-2-3 in CHA play, while Wayne State fell to 3-12-0 overall and 1-3-0 in CHA play. BSU will take a break from CHA play next weekend as it will play a home and home series with Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) oppenent Minnesota Duluth next weekend, Dec. 8-9. Friday nights game will start at 7:05 p.m. from the John S. Glas Fieldhouse while Saturday’s game will start at 7:35 p.m. from the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC) in Duluth, Minn.
