GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Bemidji State men’s
basketball team could not complete the season sweep against
North
Dakota as the Beavers fell, 73-64, this afternoon at Hyslop
Sports Center. BSU won its season-opener against the Fighting
Sioux by a basket.
Senior Charles Hanks led four Beavers in double-figures
with 13 points and team-high eight rebounds.
This game
marked the 11th consecutive 10-plus point effort for
Hanks.
The Beavers jumped out to a 8-2 lead thanks to tough defensive pressure. They
held the Fighting Sioux to a mere basket for the first 3:45. From there, UND
went on a 23-13 run to lead 25-21 at the 8:49 mark of the first. A three-pointer
by Hanks and free-throw by junior Amir Major tied things up at 25-25; it would
be the final tie of the contest.
The Sioux closed out the half with a 9-2 run in the final 6:54 to lead 34-27.
BSU made serious threats to UND’s lead in the second half, narrowing the
deficit to one point on four occasions. The last one came after two foul shots
by senior Adam Daley brought the count to 62-63 with 2:00 minutes left.
However, the BSU offense sputtered from there with just two points - UND scored
10. The hosts were
eight-of-nine from the charity stripe in those final two minutes
and 23-of-34 (.676) for the game.
The Beavers shot 80 percent (eight-of-10) from the free throw line, their third
effort of over 80 percent.
Overall, they connected on 23-of-64 (.359) from the
field, including 10-of-27 from behind the arc. UND was 43 percent (22-of-51)
from the field with a 26 percent (five-of-19) mark from three-point range. The
Sioux held a slight 38-36 rebounding edge.
Daley led the three-point assault with three of his own, totaling 11 points.
Reigning conference player of the week (Dec. 8), junior Sherwin Johnson tallied
12 points while junior James Roberson had 10 and five assists.
Todd Rypkema earned a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds as five Fighting
Sioux players had double-figure scoring totals.
The Beavers will take three weeks off until their next games of the year. They
begin their 12th season in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with visits
at Concordia-St. Paul and Winona State, Jan. 2-3. Both games begin at 8:00 p.m.
NOTE: In the all-time series between the two clubs, North Dakota owns a 23-8
advantage...Charles Hanks has held team-high scoring honors eight times this
season; with his 13 points, Hanks moved himself into ninth-place on the BSU Career
Scoring List as he stands with 1,202 points, he moved past David Muelken (1984-88)
who totaled 1,190, also, Hanks sits with 446 rebounds, eight shy of reaching
the BSU Career Top 10 Rebounding List...The 36 percent shooting was the lowest
BSU mark since it went 34 percent against Wayne State (Neb.), Feb. 1, 2003...
The 10 BSU treys is the fifth time the club has posted double-figures this season;
it averages 10.2 made per contest...The Beavers took care of the basketball with
only 11 turnovers, three shy of their season-low...Losing the free-throw battle
for the 10th time in 11 games, the Beavers have been out-scored this season for
a total of 129-249...Since 2000, the Beavers are just 1-13 against North Central
Conference teams - the lone win was against the Fighting Sioux, Nov. 15, 2003.
