ST. PAUL, Minn. - [box
score] Concordia-St. Paul used a 24-6 run to erase an
18-point second half deficit and push past a frustrated Bemidji
State team Saturday night at the Gangelhoff Center in St.
Paul, Minn.
After BSU took a 42-30 lead into the halftime
break, the team was outscored 28-46 in the final 20 minutes
while spending the majority of the half in foul trouble.
In a closely contested first half, the lead
changed hands 13 times. But the Beavers took the lead with
3-minutes and 39-seconds to play in the half on a James Roberson
(Chicago, Ill) three-pointer that would kick-start a 16-4
BSU run and put BSU on top, 42-30 at the halftime buzzer.
BSU stretched its lead to 18 points just
two minutes into the second half, but but would be held to
just six points during the next 10:24 as CSP knotted the game
at 58 apiece. A Golden Bears' Brain Jamros three 4:40 later
would put CSP in the lead for good (65-64).
The Beavers were whistled for 33 fouls sending
Rodney Williams, Amir Major (Chicago, Ill.) and Spencer Carter
(Chicago, Ill.) to the bench, and CSP to the line 40 times
where even though the Golden Bears shot just 62.5 percent,
they netted 25 points, with 13 coming in the second half.
With 56 seconds left in the game, the teams
were involved in a scuffle. BSU's Carter was slapped with
a technical, fouling out of the game while the CSP bench was
handed a technical foul. No players were eject, but the league
will review the tape of the event.
BSU had five players register double-figure
point totals with Roberson leading the way with 13. He also
posted a game-high eight assists inching closer to the all-time
assists record at BSU. He remains 30 assists shy as the NSIC
tournament approaches.
On the glass, Major grabbed nine while Carter
was good for eight as CSP held a 45-29 rebounding edge over
the Beavers.
Brian Jamros paced CSP with 20 points on
five of nine from beyond the arc. Former Beaver, Marlon Walker
led the Golden Bears on the boards pulling down nine.
The loss drops BSU into a tie with Northern State for second
place in the NSIC season standings. The Beavers will still
hold on to the No. 2 seed in the NSIC Tournament, March 3-6,
as it wins a tie-break over Northern State due to splitting
the season series with top-seed Winona State while NSU was
swept by the Warriors.
The win moves Concordia-St. Paul to 17-10
overall and 7-7 in NSIC play. The Golden Bears will travel
to Wayne, Neb. to face the No. 4 seed Wayne State College
as the fifth seed in the First Round of the NSIC Tournament.
The No. 2 Beavers welcome No. 7 Minnesota-Crookston to the
BSU Gymnasium for the first round of the 2005 NSIC Tournament,
March 2 at 7:00 p.m.
