ST. PAUL, Minn.– [box
score] The Bemidji State University men's basketball team
was defeated by Concordia University-St. Paul, 72-62, in the
2005-06 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener Friday
evening at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minn.
Bemidji State got out to an early lead netting
the first six points of the game.
CSP consistently chipped away at the BSU
lead tying the game with 9:28 to play in the half on a Kenneth
Pointer jumper and taking its first lead of the game (16-13)
on a Kyle Marxhausen three-pointer just a minute later.
The Golden Bears would increase their lead
to 10 points (33-23) before the end of the half as they out
shot BSU 42.9 to 34.4 percent in the opening stanza hitting
4-of-9 threes.
CSP came out in the second half to extend
its lead to 12 (39-27) with 17:08 to play, but a 7-1 BSU run
would cut the lead in half (40-34) during the next three minutes.
The Golden Bears took their largest lead
of the contest (65-50) as Pointer found an open lane for a
lay-up. The Beavers would reel CSP to within eight points
twice in the final two minutes, but CSP withstood the BSU
defensive pressure as the Beavers failed to gain any momentum.
CSP would go on to take its second consecutive
game from the Beavers 72-62 gaining just its third win over
the Beavers all time (3-10).
BSU was led in the game by senior guard Derik
Hollyfield (Aurora, Ill.) who netted 18 points on
7-of-15 from the floor. Stacy Pearson-Taylor
(Sr., F, Miami, Fla.) battled through cramps to net is third
double-double of the season garnering 13 points and a game-high
12 rebounds. Duane Fields (Sr., G., Los Angeles,
Calif.) and Sherwin Johnson (Sr., G/F, Macon,
Ga.) also finished scoring double-digits collecting 11 and
10 points respectively.
CSP was paced by Pointer's game-high 23 points
while Ty Thomas added 15 and Marxhausen scored 10 points and
hauled in a team-best nine boards.
BSU is now 38-40 all-time in conference openers
while it is 2-1 versus CSP in NSIC lid-lifters.
The loss drops Bemidji State to 5-8 on the
year while the team is 0-1 in NSIC play. CSP improves to 11-2
overall and 1-0 in conference play. BSU will be back in action
tomorrow as it travels to Winona, Minn to battle 2004-05 regular
season champion and nationally-ranked Winona State University.
The game is set for an 8 p.m. tip.
