ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Wells Fargo Sports Complex)
-- In The Wizard of Oz Dorothy said 'there's no place
like home' and right now the Bemidji State University men's
basketball team couldn't agree with her more.
Playing its third game in four days sandwiched
around 3,500 miles of travel, the Beavers ran into a hot University
of Alaska Anchorage team which used an 88-42 win to improve
to 4-0 on the season.
The Beavers traveled only nine players and
played with an even shorter bench Saturday due to the illness
of Marques Ramos (Jr., F/G, Henderson, Nev.)
while both Arron Evans (Jr., PG, Minneapolis,
Minn.) and Andre Bell (Jr., PG, Chicago,
Ill.) played sparingly due to injuries.
Evans an Jermon Marsh (So.,
G, Savanna, Ga.) each scored seven to lead the Beavers offensive
efforts while Sergej Baskow (Fr., F, Ludwigsburg,
Germany) and Ramos both pulled down a team-best five rebounds.
Alaska Anchorage was led by Eric Draper who
netted 23 points. Carl Arts, who was 9-of-11 from the floor,
added 20 while hauling in 11 rebounds for the game's only
double-double.
After Baskow got the Beavers on the board
with a put back during their first possession of the game
the teams traded baskets for the next three minutes.
The Seawolves would would extend their lead to five points
(11-6) at the 16:25 mark and although the Beavers would twice
cut the UAA lead to a basket, Alaska Anchorage clamped down
its full-court press and squeezed out a 16-0 run during the
next six minutes to put the Beavers in a hole from which they
couldn't dig themselves out.
Through 13 minutes of play, Alaska Anchorage was 12-of-16
from the floor (.750) and it didn't look back finishing the
contest shooting better than 54-percent (30-55).
The Beavers were 15-for-43 (.349) in the
game and struggled from the line converting just 9-of-19 free-throws
(.474).
For the second straight game, UAA won the
battle of the boards collecting 36 rebounds to BSU's 25.
The Seawolves now own a 2-0 record in the
all-time series with BSU as the teams met for the first time
ever on Friday.
The Beavers (0-3) return to the BSU Gymnasium Tuesday to lift
the lid in the home portion of their 2006-07 schedule versus
University of Wisconsin-Stout. The opening tip is slated for
7 p.m.
