BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) -- A career-best
16 points for Bemidji State University junior forward Alex
Smith (Miami, Fla.) was not enough Tuesday as St.
Cloud State University handed the Beavers an 80-50 non-conference
loss at the BSU Gymnasium.
In a slow-paced contest in which the game
was stopped 42 times for fouls and 52 free-throws were attempted,
the Huskies hit five of their first six shots from the floor
and added a free-throw to put the Beavers in a 12-point hole
(12-0) before Smith would get Bemidji State scoring column
with a lay-up at the at the 16:31 mark. SCSU would never look
back shooting 44.6-percent from the field (29-of-65) including
seven three-pointers (7-of-23) and holding a 50-30 edge on
the glass.
The Huskies got 24 points and five assists
from David Dreas including a 5-for-9 night from beyond the
arc. Matt Schneck added 11 points while Craig Coenen nabbed
a team-best nine rebounds.
In addition to Smith's 16 points he matched
Coenen for top honors on the glass with nine boards and rejected
a pair of SCSU attempts. Arron Evans (Jr.,
PG, Minneapolis, Minn.) netted 10 points, logging his third
double-figures total of the season and equaling his best scoring
effort in the green and white while he posted a team-best
three assists. James Gibson (So., G, Miami,
Fla.), despite standing just six-foot-two, proved again he
has a nose for the ball out hustling players to a career-high
seven rebounds and in just nine minutes of the bench, Marques
Ramos (Jr., G/F, Henderson, Nev.) poured in seven
points on 3-of-5 from the field.
Although the team was a little sluggish out
of the gates and struggled to gain its shooting touch early,
the Beavers stuck with the Huskies for the next 10 minutes.
BSU worked its way back from a 16-point deficit to close to
within 10 (24-14) on a pair of Evans free-throws with 6:24
to play in the first half. But St. Cloud State drained seven
of its final 11 shots of the half to put BSU behind 24 (47-23)
as the horn sounded.
Bemidji State played with the Huskies in
the second half, out shooting the visitors 44.4-percent (12-for-27)
to 38.5-percent (10-of-26) and forcing seven turnovers while
committing just five of their own, but a 2-for-10 effort from
the line by BSU would allow visitors to escape with a 33-27
advantage in the half and the victory.
Despite being oversized at nearly every position,
the Beavers out scored the Huskies 30-18 in the paint. But
SCSU used its size to muscle down rebounds, including 17 of
the offensive variety, scoring 20 points on second-chance
opportunities.
The win extends the Huskies lead in the all-time
series to 86-40 and extends its current winnings streak over
the Beavers to 13 games dating back to Dec. 2, 1993.
The Beavers (0-6) now pack their bags and head to Wayne, Neb.
for their 2006-07 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
opnener. The battle versus the Wayne State College Wildcats
is slated for an 8 p.m. start Friday at Rice Auditorium. Saturday,
the team will make the tip to Marshall, Minn. where it will
face Southwest Minnesota State University in an 8 p.m. tip
off.
