MARSHALL, Minn. (R/A Facility) -- The Bemidji
State University men's basketball team saw a six-game winning
streak over Southwest Minnesota State University come to an
end Saturday as the Mustangs downed the Beavers, 87-45, to
wrap up the first week of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
play at the R/A Facility in Marshall, Minn.
The Mustangs shot an even 50 percent from
the field (28-56) and posted a 40-27 edge on the glass to
improve to 2-0 in league play with the victory.
SMSU had four players in double-figures with
the pair of Travis Krenske and Nic Hogan leading the way with
17 points a piece. Hogan was 5-of-8 from beyond the arc while
Krenske dropped in four of his six long-range attempts as
SMSU was a deadly 13-for-27 (.481) from downtown. Ross DeMasi
added eight points and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.
The duo of Arron Evans (Jr.,
G, Minneapolis, Minn.) and Marques Ramos
(Jr., G/F, Henderson, Nev.) each registered 11 points to pace
the BSU offense. Evans accounted for three of BSU's five three-point
field goals in the game and led all players while junior forward
Alex Smith (Miami, Fla.) grabbed a team-best
six boards and fellow junior Andre Bell (PG,
Chicago, Ill.) led all players with four assists.
SMSU would get on the board first, but a
five-point run by the Beavers capped with a triple from Evans,
put BSU up 7-5 with 14:50 on the clock.
Within 11 minutes, the Mustangs had rattled
off a scoring run of 37-9, hitting 12 of their next 16 shots
from the floor, to erase the BSU advantage and extend their
lead to 21 (37-16) with just over three minutes to play in
the first half.
SMSU would go into the break leading BSU
by that same 21-point margin (42-21).
As the second half got underway, BSU netted
seven of the first nine points to shrink the SMSU advantage
to 17 points, 45-28, but by the mid point of the half, SMSU
had increased its lead to 25 points, 59-34, and would never
look back.
The Beavers were out shot 33.3 percent (18-54)
to 50.0 percent (28-56) in the game and were just 4-of-8 (.500)
from the free-throw line while SMSU converted 18 of its 23
(.783) freebies. The Mustangs also committed just six turnovers
in the contest while forcing the Beavers into 13.
The win give SMSU a 43-33 lead in the all-time
series between the teams and increases its edge over the Beavers
on its home court to 27-11 all-time.
Bemidji State (0-8; 0-2 NSIC) returns to action Tuesday (Dec.
5) when it travels to Grand Forks, N. D. to battle the University
of North Dakota. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Betty
