GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Betty Engelstad Sioux
Center) -- Bemidji State University forward Marques
Ramos (Jr., Henderson, Nev.) posted his third straight
game in double-figures Tuesday equaling a career-high 19 points,
but a University of North Dakota team that hit over 63 percent
of its shots on the night was too much for the Beavers to
match.
Bemidji State finished the first half 14-of-26
from the floor for a .538 shooting percentage. That figure
included a 5-for-6 three-point exhibition (.833)--a mark that
surpassed the Beavers average three-point output per game
this season (4.1). In most cases a team and its coaching staff
would feel pretty good about where its was midway through
the game, but tonight the Beavers found themselves down 55-35
at the half as North Dakota netted over 65 percent of its
shots in the first half (19-of-29) claiming four threes along
the way.
North Dakota would got on to take the game
94-49.
"We were simply over matched tonight,"
commented coach Matt Bowen after the game.
"They are a good team and our defense was just not able
to slow them down."
"This team is in a tough place right
now," continued Bowen of a BSU squad that has played
nine games during the first 21 days of competition. "Due
to our hectic schedule of games and travel, we have not been
able to get in the practice time we need to get better and
right now that is most evident in our defense."
Six Fighting Sioux players netted double-figure
point totals with Mike Gutter leading the way with 16. Josh
Doyle was 3-of-4 from downtown and finished with 12 points
while Tyler Koening scored 10 and led all players with seven
rebounds.
In addition to Ramos' career-high night,
Sergej Baskow (Fr., F, Ludwigsburg, Germany)
contributed eight points on 4-of-7 from the floor before fouling
out of the game with just over a minute to play. Alex
Smith (Jr., F, Miami, Fla.) collected a pair of blocks
and paced BSU on the glass with six rebounds while adding
eight points. Andre Bell (Jr., PG, Chicago,
Ill.) posted a game-high seven assists setting a new career-mark
in the process.
Offensively, Ramos has come on strong in
the last week. During the last three games, the Henderson,
Nev. native is averaging 15 points and has hit 50 percent
of his field goal attempts (21-42) and is 2-for-5 from beyond
the arc (.400).
"Marques is playing very well right
now," said Bowen. "He is doing what it takes to
be a sucessful basketball player. He takes care of his body,
he takes advantage of any practice time he can, he works hard
and he is solid in the classroom."
The win gives UND a 26-10 lead in the all-time
series while BSU has failed to win a game on the Fighting
Sioux home court since Dec. 13, 1996 and is 1-16 all-time
in Grand Forks, N.D.
Bemidji State (0-9; 0-2 NSIC) returns to action this weekend
when it kicks off a four-game homestand with a pair of conference
match-ups. Friday the team welcomes Concordia University-St.
Paul (4-1; 1-0 NSIC) and Saturday, Minnesota State University
Moorhead (4-2; 0-1 NSIC) comes to town. Both games are slated
to follow the BSU women's games with approximate start times
set for 8 p.m. at the BSU Gymnasium.
