BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) -- Bemidji
State University freshman forward Sergej Baskow
(Ludwigsburg, Germany) netted 12 points and grabbed a career-high
13 rebounds en route to his first career double-double Friday
at the BSU Gymnasium.
Down just 34-27 after the first half, the
Beavers saw Concordia University-St. Paul go on a 13-2 run
midway through the second half to extend the game out of BSU's
reach, 72-55.
Kyle Marxhausen scored 16 points to pace
the Golden Bears. Joey Peel added 11 points and a game-high
seven assists while Chuol Chany led the team on the boards
with 11.
Baskow led a trio of Beavers on double-figures.
Alex Smith (Jr., F, Miami, Fla.) netted 15
and added six assists and Arron Evans (Jr.,
G, Minneapolis, Minn.) rounded out the group with 12 points
hitting on 2-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc.
Concordia-St. paul scored the first seven
points of the game and opened a 12-2 lead over the Beavers
five minutes into the contest.
With 8:45 left in the half, a free-throw
by Joey peel gave CSP a 24-8 advantage, but the Beavers would
out score CSP 19-10 in the remainder of the period to trim
their deficit to seven points, 34-27, as the halftime horn
sounded.
As the second half got under way, the Beavers
took advantage of scrappy play to claw their way back to within
four points (44-40) at the 11:56 mark. But the door would
quickly be closed on the BSU comeback as CSP rattled off 12
of the next 14 points to push their lead to 56-42 with just
under nine minutes on the clock.
The Golden Bears stretched their lead to
as many as 20 points before taking the taking the 72-55 victory.
Although the Beavers still hold a lead in
the all-time series with CSP, the Golden Bears use the win
to creep to 11-4 all time and have now won two of the last
three meetings.
Bemidji State (0-10; 0-3 NSIC) will be back in action tomorrow
when Minnesota State University Moorhead (5-2; 1-1 NSIC) comes
to town. The game will follow the BSU women's game versus
the Dragons with an approximate time start set for 8 p.m.
