BISMARCK, N.D. (McDowell Activity Center)
-- The Bemidji State University men's basketball team got
a career-best 16 points from junior guard Arron Evans
(Minneapolis, Minn.) but a 46-point second half would
propel the University of Mary (N.D.) past the Beavers in the
first ever Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference meeting
between the the teams, 76-48.
The Beavers would trail the Marauders just
30-28 after 20 minutes of play, riding a 48-percent shooting
effort (11-of-23), but for the second consecutive contest,
the BSU shooting touch would go south during the second half
and with the host draining 18-of-26 (.692) including 4-of-7
from beyond the three-point line (.571), the deficit mounted
too quickly for the Beavers to recover.
Evans netted his career-best on 6-of-10 from
the floor including 4-for-7 form three-point land in 35 minutes
of play. Dan Sowu (Sr., G, Chicago, Ill.)
and Sergje Baskow (Fr., F, Ludwigsburg, Germany)
each added eight points as James Gibson (So.,
G, Miami, Fla.) paced the Beavers on the glass with four rebounds.
Twelve different Marauder players earned
a place in the scorebook with Eric Erdmann leading the way
with 17 points. He also added a game-high five rebounds. In
a UM-high 28 minutes, Jordan Engelhardt added 12 points and
led all players with three steals.
The Beavers came out of the opening tip to
hit their first four field goals of the contest and jump out
to a 9-2 lead after two minutes of play, but by the 14-minute
mark, the hosting Marauders had put together a nine-point
run of their own to gain control of the lead, 11-9.
The score was tied four times and the lead
changed hands six times during the remainder of the half,
and despite BSU leading by as many as five points (28-23)
with 5:23 to go in the stanza, UM held the Beavers scoreless,
netting the final seven points of the half, capped by a three-point
play by Erdmann with one second to go, to take a 30-28 lead
into the locker rooms for the break.
Mary came out of the intermission to extend
its lead to 10 points, 40-30, just 2:39 into the half scoring
10 of the first 12 points.
With 14:37 left on the clock, Evans would
net his third triple of the night to cut the deficit to eight
points (43-35), but that was as close as the Beavers would
get on the night. The Marauder offense continued to find the
bottom of the net, adding to their lead until the final horn
sounded to capture their second NSIC victory.
The Marauders (6-9; 2-5 NSIC) finished the
game with a .558 (29-52)-.347(17-49) shooting edge and a 36-22
rebounding advantage over BSU.
The Beavers are now 1-3 all-time versus Mary after dropping
the first meeting between the teams since Dec. 11, 1987.
Bemidji State (1-14; 1-5 NSIC) will be back in action tomorrow
when it makes the trip to Aberdeen, S.D. and Wach's Arena
for an 8 p.m. contest versus Northern State University.
