ABERDEEN, S.D. (Wachs Arena) -- The Bemidji
State University men's basketball team fell to Northern State
University Saturday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
play at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D.
The Wolves led from wire to wire hitting
nearly 60-percent of their field goal attempts (33-58), including
12 three-pointers, en route to claiming their fifth NSIC win
as they improve to 12-5 overall, 87-51.
For the second consecutive night Arron
Evans (Minneapolis, Minn.) led BSU on the offensive
end of the court, following up a career-high 16 points at
Mary (N.D.) with 11 at NSU. The junior guard was 4-of-9 from
the floor and 3-of-4 from outside the three-point arc while
grabbing three rebounds.
In his first start of the season, Jermon
Marsh (So., G, Savannah, Ga.) added nine points and
led the team with a two steals. Brandon Fields
(Fr., PG, Los Angeles, Calif.) pitched in four points and
led all players with a career-high six assists as
Alex Smith (Jr., F, Miami, Fla.) came up big on the
defensive end of the court posting a game-high four blocks.
Craig Nelson led a trio of Wolves in double-figures
scoring a game-high 23 points making good on 7-of-13 three-point
attempts and going 2-for-2 a the line. Kevin Ratzsch added
15 points while Robert Thomas came off the bench to lead all
played with seven rebounds helping the Wolves to a 37-26 edge
on the boards.
The Wolves got out of the blocks quickly
hitting their first two shots of the night, as both Nelson
and Ratzsch made good on three-point attempts putting NSU
up 6-0 just 80 seconds into the game.
BSU's Smith would cut the lead to four with
16 minutes left in the half, but NSU would convert on its
next two possessions to returns its lead to eight, 10-2, by
the 14-minute mark.
The Beavers would keep pace with the hosts
during remainder of the half. Despite trailing by as many
as 15 (26-11), BSU would use a four-point run in the final
minute of the stanza to trim the Wolves' lead to 35-25 before
the halftime horn sounded.
Northern State would come out of the break
to net the first five points as Nelson added another three
followed by Mitch Boeck jumper to match its largest lead of
the game, 15 (40-25), just 1:13 into the second.
Up 14 (47-33) with 15:51 left on the clock,
NSU would use a 13-2 run, sparked by three triples from Nelson,
to stretch its lead to 25 points (62-37), putting the game
out of reach for the Beavers midway through the second half.
The Wolves would keep the Beavers at bay
as the clock wound down claiming the conference victory, 87-51.
The Beavers are now 20-37 all-time versus the Wolves and have
lost the last two contests at Wachs Arena.
Bemidji State (1-15; 1-6 NSIC) now begins preparation for
another tough week of NSIC competition. The Beavers welcome
2006 NCAA Division II National Champion Winona State University
to the BSU Gymnasium Friday (Jan. 19) and will host Upper
Iowa University for the first time as an NSIC foe Saturday.
Both contents are set to follow the BSU women's basketball
games with approximate start time set for 8 p.m.
