ST. PAUL, Minn. (Gangelhoff Center) -- The
Bemidji State University men's basketball team fought Concordia
University-St. Paul from wire to wire, but the Golden Bears
proved to be too much for the Beavers Saturday, handing the
team a 75-68 loss in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
play at the Gangelhoff Center.
CSP scored first and never trailed in the
game. Despite the Beavers tying the score on five occasions,
BSU was never able to surpass the hosting Golden Bears on
their home court.
Concordia-St. Paul's Craig Heiman scored
20 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead all players in
the game while Kyle Marxhausen added 18 and Joey Peel netted
10 points and led the team with four assists.
Alex Smith (Jr., F, Miami,
Fla.) paced the balanced BSU scoring attack with 12 points
and posted a game-high three blocked shots. Arron
Evans (Jr., G, Minneapolis, Minn.), Dan Sowu
(Sr., G, Chicago, Ill.) and Sergej Baskow
(Fr., F, Ludwigsburg, Germany) each added nine and Marques
Ramos (Jr., G/F, Henderson, Nev.) chipped in eight.
Sowu matched Heiman's game-high seven boards
but the Beavers were on the short end of the battle on the
glass, 35-32.
After misfiring on its first possession,
CSP took its first lead of the game 1:17 in on a Drew Shepp
layup.
Smith would help BSU to keep pace equalizing
the Golden Bears' scoring efforts with field goals on three
consecutive trips down the floor, adding a dunk over the CSP
defense as an exclamation to knot the score at 6-6 with 16:24
left in the half.
But the Beavers would be held scoreless during
the next three minutes as Concordia-St. Paul constructed an
eight-point lead, 14-6.
BSU would gnaw away at the CSP advantage
and lock the game at 19-19 on an Evans triple with 8.53 remaining
in the first and tied the game for the fifth time, four minutes
later, 23-23, when Evans found a seam to drive in for a layup.
But the Golden Bears would extend their lead back to six points,
37-31, by the end of the first stanza capped by Marxhausen
three-pointer with tics on the clock.
The second half began just as the first ended
with Marxhausen hitting from long range. That shot sparked
a seven-point run by CSP that saw its lead grow to 11 points,
44-33, just three minutes in to the half.
Bemidji State again battled back twice cutting
the deficit to four points by the 10-minute mark, but a streak
of 14 consecutive points by the Golden Bears gave them a 62-44
advantage with 7:32 on the clock. Despite a late rally to
reel the Bears to within six, 74-68, the run would put the
victory out of the Beavers reach.
Bemidji State shot 44 percent in the game
(26-59), was 6-of-18 from three-point land (.333) and converted
10-of-14 at the three-throw line (.714). CSP was an even 27-of-54
(.500) from the floor, 5-for-15 from downtown (.333) and 16-of-26
at the line (.615).
BSU falls to 11-5 all-time versus CSP as
the Golden Bears completed the season series sweep after dropping
BSU, 72-55, Dec. 8th at the BSU Gymnasium.
Bemidji State (3-19; 3-10 NSIC) will be back in action next
Saturday when it hosts the University of Minnesota, Crookston
(1-21; 0-13 NSIC) in NSIC play. The game is slated to begin
at 8 p.m.
