Oct. 14, 2006 - BSU basketball teams begin practice Sunday
With the crisp hints of frigid weather in the air and a recent dusting of snow on the ground it is inevitable that winter is moving in on Northern Minnesota. But the coldest months of the year also bring with them indoor sports and the Bemidji State University men's and women's basketball teams are taking the signs of winter as a green light to begin training for their upcoming seasons. Sunday, both teams will open the doors of the BSU Gymnasium for their first organized team practices in preparation for the 2006-07 season.

Aug. 21, 2006 - Bowen adds Jeremy Tiers to coaching staff
50thLogoBemidji State University head men’s basketball coach Matt Bowen has named Jeremy Tiers as an assistant coach for the 2006-07 season. Tiers comes to BSU after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn.

June 30, 2006 - Matt Bowen named head men's basketball coach
50thLogoBemidji State University Director of Athletics Dr. Rick Goeb today announced the hiring of Matthew Bowen as head men’s basketball coach. Bowen becomes the 19th head coach in the 84-year history of the program. Bowen comes to BSU after 14 year of assistant coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level.

June 26, 2006 - BSU to host open house for coaching candidates
Bemidji State University Director of Athletics Dr. Rick Goeb has announced that the department will host a pair open houses this week providing the general public an opportunity to meet the candidates for the university’s head men’s basketball coaching position. The open houses will take place at the Green Mill Restaurant and Bar Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 5:00-6:00 p.m.

June 20, 2006 - BSU announces Men's basketball coaching finalists
Bemidji State University Director of Athletics Dr. Rick Goeb today announced that Matthew Bowen and Jerry Olson have been named as finalists for the BSU head men’s basketball coaching position. Bowen is currently an assistant coach at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Ind. while Olson stands as the head women’s basketball coach and athletic director at Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Okla. The finalists will be on campus during the week of June 26-30 for interviews.

Bemidji State University has today announced that its summer youth basketball camps slated June 12-16 have been cancelled due to lack of interest and the transition of men's coaching staff.

April 28, 2006 - Smith resigns from BSU men's basketball program
50thLogoBemidji State University Director of Athletic Dr. Rick Goeb has announced the resignation of Patrick Smith from the men's basketball program. Smith leaves BSU to return to the junior college ranks where he will serve as the head men's basketball coach at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas.

April 12, 2006 - BSU adds pair of local high school standouts for 06-07
Bemidji State University head men's basketball coach Patrick Smith today announced that high school seniors Joshua Roysland (Fosston, Minn.) and Scott Stebe (Gonvick, Minn.) have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Beavers in 2006-07.

Apr. 2, 2006 - BSU Spring Youth Basketball Academy rescheduled
Bemidji State University head men's basketball coach Patrick Smith has announced that there has been a change in the schedule for the Spring Youth Basketball Academy. Instead of beginning on April 3, the first session has been pushed back to April 24 from 6-9 p.m. Following session will take place April 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., May 1 from 6-9 p.m. and will wrap up May 6 from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Each session will take place at the BSU Gymnasium.

Mar. 16, 2006 - BSU to host Spring Basketball Academy; Sets dates for Summer Camps
Bemidji State head men's basketball coach Patrick Smith has announced that the BSU men's basketball program will host a Spring Development Academy for youth in grades 2-12 during April. Smith also announced the dates for the summer's youth camps and high school team leagues.

Mar. 1, 2006 - Pearson-Taylor leads BSU to 76-63 tournament win
50thLogoSenior forward Stacy Pearson-Taylor (Miami, Fla.) scored 18 points and grabbed a career-best 20 rebound for his team-leading six double-double o the season as the Bemidj State men's basketball team used a 76-63 win over Minnesota State-Moorhead to advance to the NCSI/Red Baron Classic semifinal round for the fourth consecutive season. The 20-rebound game set a new NSIC Tournament record shatter the old mark of 15 set last season by WInona State's John Smith.

With the dust settled on the 2005-06 regular season, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference office has announced the final standings and seedings for the 2006 NSIC/Red Baron Basketball Classic. The Bemidji State University men will host their quarterfinal match-up while the BSU women will hit the road for their first round contest.

Feb. 25, 2006 - BSU holds off Concordia-St. Paul in 2005-06 finale
Manuel Guzman (Sr., C, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) scored a team-best 16 points while leading all players with 11 rebounds as the Bemidji State University men's basketball team defeated Concordia University-St. Paul, 63-60, in the 2005-06 regular season finale Sunday afternoon at the BSU Gymnasium.

Feb. 18, 2006 -BSU drops 82-76 contest to MSU-Moorhead in overtime
Playing most of overtime without the services of Spencer Carter (Sr., F, Chicago, Ill.), Derik Hollyfield (Sr., G, Aurora, Ill.) and Manuel Guzman (Sr., Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic), who each fouled out of the game, the Bemidji State University men's basketball team was out scored 10-4 in the extra period as Minnesota State University-Moorhead stole an 82-76 upset win from the Beavers Saturday night at the BSU Gymnasium.

There was a definite feeling of post-season pressure in the air of the BSU Gymnasium Friday as the Bemidji State men's basketball team crawled into a tie with Northern State University for second place in the NSIC standings with a 58-55 win over the nationally-ranked Wolves.

The Bemidji State University men's basketball team has been ranked among the North Central Region's 10 best teams in the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Regional Poll, released by the organization today. The No. 10 ranking marks the Beavers' third appearance in the regional poll and the just sixth week the program has found itself among the region's best.

Feb. 11, 2006 - Sharp-shooting BSU scorches Mustangs 84-71
What a difference a day makes! Less than 24 hours prior stepping onto the court Saturday, the Bemidji State men's basketball team posted one of its worst shooting performances of the season hitting just 20-of-67 shots. But Saturday, BSU made good on its first three attempts of the night en route to a season-high 57 percent shooting effort and a 84-71 win over Southwest Minnesota State University.

At 11-9 overall and 6-2 in NSIC play, the Beavers sit just one game behind co-leaders Winona State University and Northern State University in the league standings. With a head-to-head match-up between the league’s top two teams this weekend, if BSU takes care of its own business, the team could find itself holding at least a share of second place in the standings.

Feb. 4, 2005 - BSU completes season sweep over UMC with 82-60 win
Bemidji State University senor center Manuel Guzman (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) scored 20 points on 7-of-12 from the field and 6-of-7 from the line as BSU began it second trip through the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule with an 82-60 victory over the University of Minnesota-Crookston Saturday at UMC's Lysaker Gymnasium.

The Bemidji State University men's basketball team used its size and physical game to utterly dominate the paint Tuesday in a 117-69 exhibition win over the Grand Forks Air Force Base at the BSU Gymnasium. The Beavers out scored the Warriors 66-14 inside while pulling down 67 rebounds to the visitor's 28.

The Northern State University men's basketball team used a 19-5 run during the opening 6:44 of the second half to stretch a 39-37 halftime lead to a 16-point advantage (58-42). Despite climbing back to within six points with less than two minutes to play, Bemidji State University could not get over the hump as Beavers fell to No. 6 NSU 85-75 Saturday night in front of over 6,000 at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen, S.D.

Jan. 7, 2006 - Hollyfield nets seven threes in win over Winona State
Derik Hollyfield (Sr., G, Aurora, Ill.) ripped the nets for a career-high seven three-point field goals on just nine attempts (.777) in leading the Beavers to an 84-79 conference win over nationally-ranked Winona State. As a team, BSU was 9-of-13 from downtown shooting nearly 70 percent from beyond the arc in the win.
