Sixth Year at Bemidji State
On July 23, 2002, Bemidji State University soccer took an
integral step towards developing into a competitive program
with the hiring of Jim Stone as the head
women’s soccer coach. The BSU soccer program had never
won more than the four victories Stone’s squad had in
2002 - his first season. In 2006, the Beavers recorded 10 wins and finished in a tie for second place in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Before his arrival at BSU, Stone served as head girl’s
varsity soccer coach at Spring Lake Park High School during
Fall 2001. He also
assisted with the Wings Soccer Club, a Premiere under-15 team
in Minnesota hosting some of the top players in the state.
Prior to Spring Lake Park and Wings SC, Stone was involved with the Fargo Shanley
High School boys team (1998), Red River High School girls (1997), and Fargo North High School junior varsity (1997).
At the college ranks, Stone spent the 1999 and 2000 seasons
as an assistant coach with both the men’s and women’s
programs at Augsburg College.
Stone, a 1998 graduate of Concordia (Minn.) College, captained
the Concordia men’s soccer team in 1997. He earned second-team
all-MIAC honors in 1997 and helped lead Concordia to MIAC
Championships in 1995 and 1996. In 1996, Stone and the Cobbers
reached the round of 16 at the NCAA Division III national
tournament.
The St. Paul, Minn., native, holds a Level I goalkeeper diploma
from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, which
instructs coaches on the nuances of training the goaltender
position. Stone also holds a National Diploma from the NSCAA
and a National “C” License from the United States
Soccer Federation, awarded for completing a USSF-controlled
curriculum focusing on the development of individual technical
skills and team systems that fit those individual skills. Most recently, Stone received his USSF National Youth License.
During his first five seasons at BSU, Stone's squad has set dozens of single season and career records for both individual and team. These records include most wins in a season (12) and most shutouts (7) in a season. Single season individual records include goals (17) and points (38) both set by forward Katie Meinhardt (Maple Grove, Minn.) in 2004.
Under Stone's guidance BSU has been well represented with postseason accolades. He has coached 17 All-NSIC selections and six NSCAA All-Region selections. Along with being named All-NSIC and NSCAA All-Region, former goalkeeper Kari Torgerson was also the program's first NSCAA All-America selection and NSIC Defensive Player of the year in 2005.
