| Winona State Downs Bemidji State 3-1 |
Oct. 5, 2003
BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Winona State soccer team showed why they
are the defending Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champion
today as the Warriors defeated Bemidji State 3-1 at the BSU
Soccer Field. The loss came just one day after the Beavers defeated
Northern State 1-0 in overtime.
BSU opened the scoring in the ninth minute when sophomore Maria
Balsimo scored off of an indirect from freshman Tegan
Moehn to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
Winona State responded with a goal of its own in the 18th minute
as Whitney Bernhardt beat goalkeeper Kari Torgeson to tie the
game at 1-1.
The Warriors got on the board again in the 38th minute when
Kara Fritze scored one of her two goals on the day to give Winona
State a 2-1 lead, which marked the end of the scoring in the
first half.
A turning point in the game occurred early in the second half
when the Beavers appeared to have tied up the game, but were
informed that the goal was disallowed.
Winona State added one more goal in the 84th minute to solidify
a 3-1 victory.
Head coach Jim Stone felt as though the Beavers may have been
still riding their victory over Northern State.
“It was tough to get up for today’s game after such
an emotionally and physically draining game yesterday,”
Stone said, “We started off strong with the 1-0 lead,
but they quickly regained the lead and we weren’t able
to score again after that.”
Freshman goalkeeper Kari Torgerson finished
with nine saves in the loss for BSU.
The Beavers are now 2-9-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the NSIC. BSU
will be in action again on Saturday, Oct. 11 and Sunday, Oct.
12 with matches against Hamline and MSU-Moorhead. Start time
is 1:00 p.m., at the BSU Soccer Field for both matches. |
