Beavers blanked by defending NSIC Champs, 2-0
Winona State’s defense shuts down BSU attack

Sept. 11, 2005

WINONA, Minn. - The Bemidji State University soccer team was shut out Sunday, by defending Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference champion Winona State. The Warriors took a 2-0 victory on the strength of a defense that allowed just two shots on goal all afternoon.

Winona State took the early lead with a goal in the third minute of the first half from the foot of Holly Sutton. From that point on, the game became a chess match between the teams as they matched each other move for move not allowing any goals until the 86th minute. The Warriors were the beneficiaries once again with a goal to seal the victory, 2-0.

A fine afternoon by the BSU goalkeeper Kari Torgerson (Jr.; New Hope, Minn.) ended with 11 saves. Torgerson took the loss for the Beavers, dropping her season record to 2-2-1.

“We really played well for about 65 minutes of the game, “ said head coach Jim Stone. “We had a real physical game, but overall I was happy with the way we played. It is a tough place to go play against the defending NSIC champs.”

With the loss the team record for BSU drops to 3-2-2 on the season, and 1-1-0 in the NSIC.

Bemidji State will finish up their current six game road-trip this weekend with games at Minnesota State-Moorhead and Northern State. The Beavers will play at Moorhead on Saturday, September 17, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. and then travel to Aberdeen, S.D. to take on the Wolves Sunday at 1:00. BSU beat MSU-M last season for the first time in school history, but took a 2-0 loss to Northern State in the last meeting between the teams.
