ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Bemidji State University’s junior goalkeeper Kari Torgerson (New Hope, Minn.) was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season. She led the Beavers to a win and a tie in NSIC action this weekend at Wayne State and Southwest Minnesota State.
In back-to-back double overtime games, she gave up just two goals in 213 minutes in net. In game one, against Wayne State College, the Torgerson denied 13 shots over 103 minutes ending a 2-1 BSU victory. Sunday, she stonewalled seven shots in a 1-1 tie at Southwest Minnesota State.
This award marks the third time this season that Torgerson has been named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week. Two weeks ago, she brought home the award stopping a total of 19 shots in a win over Southwest Minnesota State and tie against Wayne State. Earlier this season she was honored after a double-overtime shutout tie at St. Scholastica.
The award was the fourth Player of the Week selection for BSU this season. Defender Tegan Moehn (Ramsey, Minn.) was named Defensive Player of the Week for her play in back-to-back shutouts for BSU over Minnesota State-Moorhead and Northern State, who is now ranked fifth in the NSCAA Central Region. During those games Moehn showed her versatility adding a goal and an assist
The NSIC Offensive Player of the Week award was given to Southwest Minnesota State’s Joelle Dean.
The award marks the sixth time Torgerson has been recognized for her performance by the NSIC. She was selected for the same award three times last season.
BSU will be at home for four straight games, with the first two coming on Parents’ Weekend against Minnesota State-Moorhead and Northern State. Those games are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15 and 16, with kickoff at 1:00 pm.
