BSU defense records second straight shutout
Torgerson stellar in net, Hyvare lights scoreboard for 1-0 victory

Oct. 22, 2005

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Goaltender Kari Torgerson (Jr.; New Hope, Minn.) continued her great season notching her fourth shutout of the year in a 1-0 victory over conference rival Concordia-St. Paul. Team scoring leader Kelly Hyvare (Fr.; Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored her eighth goal of the season to pace the Beaver offense.

Torgerson, who was named NSIC Defensive Player of the Year in 2003 and 2004, was in prime form stopping all eight shots she faced from the Golden Bears. Along with the four solo shutouts, Torgerson has also paired with teammate Jessica Meath (Fr.; Bethel, Minn.) to share shutouts in four other games.

Hyvare, a rookie forward, continued her scoring efforts with Bemidji State’s only goal. Her eighth tally of the season came less than four minutes into the game. Senior Lindsay Natwick (Bismarck, N.D.) pushed a long pass ahead to Katie Meinhardt (Jr.; Maple Grove, Minn.) who made one touch and then quickly flicked it across to Hyvare for the score from just five yards out. Meinhardt was credited with her first assist of the season, while Natwick tallied her fifth of the year and school record 22nd of her career.

The shutout improved Torgerson’s season record to 9-2-5, and she now has a 0.91 goals against average in 18 games played this year. Over her career she now has recorded 13 shutouts.

Bemidji State remains firmly entrenched in second place in the NSIC with its only conference loss coming earlier this season to Winona State, who has yet to be beaten in conference.

The Beavers will play their final regular season game next weekend as they travel to Minnesota-Crookston on October 29 at 1:00 pm. BSU beat the Golden Eagles earlier this season 3-0 in Bemidji.
