Bemidji State strikers climb NSCAA polls

Oct. 27, 2005

MISSION, Kan. -- The Bemidji State University soccer team moved up two spots in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America regional polls. BSU is ranked seventh in the Central region marking the highest in the ten-year history of the program.

The two-spot jump for the Beavers came after a 0-0 double overtime tie with Winona State, who is ranked third in the same poll, and a 1-0 victory over Concordia-St. Paul. Goalkeeper Kari Torgerson was in net for the weekend stopping 14 shots against WSU and collecting eight saves in the win over CSP.

Head Coach Jim Stone’s club has posted a season record of 10-3-6 and 8-1-4 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The previous record for conference wins (3) set last season, was passed as this year’s team picked up their fourth win in just its fifth NSIC game.

The Beavers played just seven conference games last season, but will play 14 this year as the NSIC implemented double-round conference play. The double-round match setup gives each team a chance to play each other twice during the regular season, as opposed to once in the past.

The Beavers are one of three NSIC teams to be in the NSCAA Central Region top 10. Defending NSIC champion Winona State sits in the third spot and Northern State is ranked 10th.

The University of Nebraska-Omaha continues to have a firm grip on the first spot, ranked at the top for the seventh consecutive week. Minnesota State Mankato is ranked second to round out the top three.

The Beavers have secured the second seed in next week’s NSIC playoff championship and will play its final regular season game this weekend at Minnesota-Crookston. The kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29.
