BEMIDJI, Minn. - Senior defenders Cristina Egnell (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Erin Foss (Bismarck, N.D) have been awarded ESPN the Magazine CoSIDA District V Academic All-District honors for their efforts on the field and in the classroom. Egnell and Foss are the captains of Bemidji State, which finished as the second place team in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season.
Egnell was named to the Academic All-District First Team and Foss was named to the Academic All-District Second Team.
Egnell and Foss, ironically, have each played in every game of their four-year careers. They are tied for the BSU career games played record.
They have been part of defense that has also rewritten BSU record books. Last season, the Beavers set school records of seven shutouts and a 1.74 goals against average. While BSU has broken the shutout record with 10 this season, it is on pace to shatter the goals against average as it has given up just 0.85 goals per game this year.
Egnell, over her four-year career, has been a mainstay on the defense starting in all 79 games. Over that time, she has scored one goal and collected five assists. Her goal came earlier this season on Sept. 2 against Northland College. Last season, Egnell received CoSIDA District V Academic All-District Third Team honors. She is a Physical Education major.
Foss has played in all 79 games over four-year career as well. She has posted four goals and one assist. Foss also has one goal this season, coming on a penalty kick against the University of Mary on Oct. 4 in Bismarck, N.D.
The tandem has also been part of the program that has set a school record for wins in a season each of the last four years.
Egnell, being named to the All-District First Team, will now be voted on for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team.
The Beavers will be back in action Saturday in Winona, Minn., the site of the semifinal and final rounds of the NSIC tournament. BSU will be taking on Northern State at 3:30 pm. The Beavers beat Northern State 3-0 in Aberdeen, S.D., and then battled to a 1-1 tie in Bemidji, Minn.
