MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Bemidji State University soccer team's three-game winning streak was snapped Saturday afternoon in Marquette, Mich., against Saginaw Valley State. Despite a scoreless first half, SVSU solved the BSU defense twice in the second half to take a 2-0 shutout win.
Saginaw Valley seemed to have control of the ball from the start managing 27 shots in the game, including 13 on net. BSU goalkeeper Jessica Meath (Bethel, Minn.) turned away all six shots in the first half and made 11 total saves in the game.
SVSU’s Kim Oberski led the charge with 10 shots (6 SOG) and scored in the 49th minute to break the scoreless tie. Tammie Edmunds added the capper for the Cardinals with an unassisted goal in the 66th minute to put the game out of reach.
BSU put just two shots on goal in the contest and Cardinals goalie Stacy LaLond denied each attempt.
After winning three straight non-conference games in Duluth and an Advantage Emblem Cup trophy last weekend, BSU was riding a wave of goal scoring heading into Saturday. The Beavers scored four, four, and seven goals in their last three games.
But, the Saginaw Valley State defense seemed to put the clamps on BSU’s leading scorers Kelly Hyvare (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Katie Meinhardt (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.). Hyvare and Meinhardt were each limited to just one shot on goal in the game.
BSU will play Northern Michigan on Sunday at 1 p.m., in Marquette. The Beavers haven’t faced Northern Michigan since a 5-1 loss in Marquette in 2003.
