BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State University head soccer coach Jim Stone announced today the Beavers’ 2007 regular season schedule, which will begin at home on the BSU Soccer Field with a Aug. 24 tilt against Northern Michigan University 1 p.m.
Coach Stone’s squad will also play three of the four Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference newcomers in the first two weeks with games against Augustana College (Aug. 26), St. Cloud State University (Sept. 6), and Minnesota, Duluth (Sept. 10). The games against the NSIC’s new teams will not count toward the conference record until the 2008-09 season.
The Beavers will also play NCAA Division I North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D., on Sept. 1 before beginning their conference season at Minnesota State University, Moorhead on Sept. 8 at Noon. BSU’s non-conference slate for 2007 also includes the University of North Dakota, which is in transition to NCAA Division I status, Jamestown College and two in-season exhibition games against Providence College (Manitoba, Canada).
Bemidji State is coming off a 10-6-2 record in 2006, which ranks as the second best season in school history with a .611 winning percentage in 18 games. The Beavers ended the season ranked 10th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Central Region poll after compiling a 7-6-2 record against regional opponents.
BSU was led in 2006 by NSIC scoring champ Kelly Hyvare (So., F, Coon Rapids, Minn.) who tallied 28 points (12g, 4a) and goalkeeper Kari Torgerson (Sr., New Hope, Minn.) who compiled a 9-5-2 record and recorded 5.5 shutouts. Torgerson and Hyvare led a list of four Beavers to attain All-NSIC accolades, but were the only two named NSCAA/Adidas All-Region.
Bemidji State will lose services of six seniors heading into 2007, including Torgerson and another All-NSIC selection Tegan Moehn (Sr., D, Ramsey, Minn.). With Hyvare and a strong freshman class, Stone will retain 90 percent of his goal scoring from the ‘06 squad. The 2007 signing class includes three defenders, two forwards, a midfielder, a goalkeeper, and a one player who has spent time at both midfield and forward. This class marks Stone’s largest recruiting class since he brought in thirteen players, including the six graduating seniors, in his first signing.
The 2007 schedule concludes with the NSIC Championships starting with the first round on Oct. 30 and concluding with the final on Nov. 4 with the site to be determined.
