BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University head soccer coach Jim Stone has announced that Bemidji High School’s Katherine Wheeler will join the Beavers for the 2005 season. She continues the tradition of native Bemidji players that have made the jump to the NCAA Division-II ranks to play for the Beavers including Kelly Lessmann (1999-2002), Amy Vleck (2000-02) and current BSU mid-fielder Megan Wallner.

While at BHS Wheeler won three soccer letters being named as a team captain last fall. She gained all-conference honors as well as being selected Most Valuable Defenseman by her peers during her final prep campaign. As a junior she was awarded the BHS Team Spirit Award. She also plays hockey for the Lumberjacks.

“In addition to brining a sense of community to our program Katherine brings a great work ethic and attitude,” commented Stone. “She is a leader and the type of player and person that makes those around her better by always competing and giving 100 percent.”

The incoming class of 2005 marks the second season in which BSU has added a player from BHS. “We want to have solid relationships will all of the local soccer programs in particular Bemidji High School,” said Stone. “I think it means a lot that our last two recruiting classes have included Bemidji players.”

The Beavers recently closed the book on their most successful season in their nine-year history with an overall record of 11-12-0 and 3-4-0 mark in NSIC play. The team completed the 2004 season with more wins than any other season and made the NSIC Tournament for the first time ever.
