CROOKSTON, Minn. –- On an afternoon
that the Bemidji State University softball team belted four
home runs to add to its single-season school record (19),
the Beavers swept the University of Minnesota, Crookston in
a rare non-conference twin bill, 11-6 and 14-2.
Bemidji State piled up 27 hits in 12 innings of play and
was led by a 4-for-6 effort from Mara Johnson
(So., Bemidji, Minn.). The Bemidji native posted five RBI
hitting a pair of doubles and her team-leading fifth home
run of the season. Jamie Docken (Jr., Owatonna,
Minn.) added a 4-for-7 afternoon with two RBI, a double and
a home run while Megan McDonald (Jr., Warroad,
Minn.) posted her first round-tripper of the season.
The Beavers set the tone for the day very early. After a
pair of BSU players walked in the top of the first, Johnson,
the fourth batter in the Beavers' line up, hit a three-run
rocket over the outfield fence to put BSU up 3-0.
UMC would come back in the home half of the inning to post
a pair of runs on the BSU hurler Kristen Paine
(Jr., Chisholm, Minn.), stringing together three hits.
Bemidji State would extend its lead to 4-2 in the second
when McDonald put a solo shot out of the park.
Allison Willard (So., Hutchinson, Minn.)
replaced Paine on the mound in the bottom of the second and
would hold the Golden Eagles scoreless during the next four
innings. In the meantime, the Beavers would add three more
runs to go up 7-2.
The hosts would reel BSU in to within two runs in the sixth
inning using an RBI single and would later score on a passed
ball and again on a wild pitch before Willard shut the Golden
Eagles down.
But in the top of the seventh, BSU would solidify the win
scoring four runs on five hits including a two-run double
by Kasey Callison (So., Eagle River, Alaska).
The six-run cushion (11-5) was enough for Willard who would
give up one run in the bottom of the seventh before claiming
her seventh win (7-9) of 2007. She allowed seven his and four
runs (two earned) while piling up eight strike outs.
Game two was a five-inning hit parade for BSU. Ten Beavers
combined for 16 hits in the contest with Amy Klaers
(So., Elk River, Minn.) pacing the team going 2-for-3 with
three RBI.
BSU got on the board in the top of the second mixing three
hits in with three UMC errors to go up 3-0.
The team would add three more in the third and would explode
for six runs, sending ten players to the plate in the fourth
before the Golden Eagles platted their first run.
Up 12-2 after four innings, the Beavers finished UMC off
in the fifth adding a pair of runs before Lindsey
Imhof (Sr., Little Fork, Minn.) would retire the
Golden Eagles for her first win of the season.
Imhof went five innings giving up just six hits and two earned
runs while walking a pair and adding two strike outs.
The double-header between the NSIC foes was does not count
towards the league standings since the teams already played
their conference contests April 19th.
BSU is now 4-0 versus UMC this season and has won its last
five versus the Golden Eagles.
The Beavers (10-24, 4-14 NSIC) return to BSU Field Tuesday
for their home and regular-season finale. BSU's non-conference
twin bill versus the University of North Dakota is slated
for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
