May 2, 2007

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Northern Sun Intecollegiate Conference office announced the pairings for this weekends’ NSIC Softball Tournament hosted by regular season co-champion Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minn. The Beavers will take on the other co-champion, Winona State, in the first round of the double elimination tournament.

Seventh-seeded BSU will play the second-seeded Warriors in the opening game of the tournament at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 4, at the SMSU softball field. Also at 10 a.m., no. 3 MSU, Moorhead will take on the sixth seed, Wayne State at the Marshall Softball Complex. The winners will meet in the second round at 2 p.m. on Friday, while the loser of each game will also meet Friday at 2 p.m. at the Marshall Softball Complex.

Bemidji State lost both meetings against Winona State this season, but by a combined margin of just three runs. On Apr. 9, the Warriors took a 3-2 victory, and the beat BSU 5-3 two weeks later on Apr. 22.

The Beavers finished the regular season with a 10-26 overall record, including 4-14 in the NSIC. Head coach Shane Veenker’s squad set the single season team home run record with 19, nine more than the 1999 record of 10.
