BISMARCK, N.D. – The Bemidji State University softball team had to reschedule a home doubleheader to be played at the University of Mary due to unfit playing conditions in Bemidji, and that lack of the home-field advantage cost the Beavers as they dropped two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matchups with the Marauders today at Brad Walsh Park.

The Beavers dropped the first game of the doubleheader 14-5, and lost a heartbreaker in the second game of the series 5-4.

Mara Johnson (Jr., Bemidji, Minn.), Karissa Hendrickson (Fr., Big Lake, Minn.) and Megan McDonald (Jr., Warroad, Minn.) each had two hits in the first game, and McDonald recorded three runs batted in to lead the Beavers. Johnson hit a home run and also scored twice.

BSU allowed 14 hits and committed four errors, while the bats of Bemidji State could only muster eight hits.

Allison Willard (Jr., Hutchinson, Minn.) started the game for the Beavers, and lasted only 3.2 innings after allowing 10 earned runs on 11 hits. She walked three and was unable to record a strikeout. Jamie Lund (Fr., Grantsburn, Wisc.) pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits.

Bemidji State was three outs away from recording its first NSIC victory of the season in the second game of the series, but the Beavers gave up three runs in the top of the seventh and final inning, blowing the late lead.

BSU led 4-2 going into the final frame, and Kristen Paine (Sr., Chisholm, Minn.) allowed three runs to lose the game. She pitched well, going the distance, while allowing only three earned runs. She gave up nine hits, walked three and struck out three.

Paine wasn’t helped by a defense that committed another four errors in the game, which eventually cost BSU in the end.

Jamie Docken (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) went 3-for-4 at the plate, collecting a home run in the process. She was the only Beaver with multiple hits, and her and McDonald picked up the two RBI.

BSU (1-13, 0-7 NSIC) plays a doubleheader Thursday against the University of Minnesota, Crookston in Crookston, Minn.
