BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University tennis team finished a two match weekend at home with a hard fought loss on Sunday against the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons by a score of 9-0. The Beavers play improved overall as there were a total of four match that were decided by tiebreakers on the day but all went the Dragons way.

The action began on the doubles side where MSUM got the three point sweep despite tough competition from the No. 3 doubles team of Julie Kapsner (Pierz, Minn.) and Amy Erickson (Roseau, Minn.) who took the MSUM pair of Heather Buesing and Maria Cederberg to a tiebreaker that favored the Dragons 1-7 to take the match by a score of 8-9.

Singles action saw a lot of close matches that didn’t go the Beavers way as they took three different positions to tiebreakers but failed to take a point form the Dragons. The No. 2 singles match saw Kali Welu (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) win the first set of her match against the Dragons Rose Milless 7-6 on a 7-0 tiebreaker, however Milless fought back to win the second set 4-6, and also defeated Welu on the third set tiebreaker 5-10. Freshman Shelia Hoberg (Bismarck N.D.) took her opponent to a tiebreaker as well as she won her first set 6-4 over Ellie Matheson but couldn’t come away with a point as Matheson took the second set 3-6 and the tiebreaker 3-7. The No. 4 singles match was just as exciting as Kapsner came back from a 1-6 first set loss to force a tiebreaker by winning the second set 7-5 but Claudia Irina proved too much as she took the tiebreaker 3-10.

The loss was the first of NSIC play for the Beavers and puts their record at 0-3 (0-1; NSIC). The Dragons record improves to 3-4 (2-0; NSIC) on the season. The Beavers will look for their first victory of the season when they host the University of Mary Marauders on March 18th at 1:00 p.m. in the Gillett Recreation and Fitness Center.
