March 25, 2007

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Beaver’s tennis team was unable to pick up their first win on the season as they were defeated in all three of their matches this past weekend in Duluth, Minn.

The Beavers started out their weekend on Saturday night against the College of St. Scholastica Saints and were defeated by a score of 0-9. The team of Kali Welu (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) and Sheila Hoberg (Bismarck, N.D.) saw trouble at the No. 1 doubles position as they were defeated by the team of Jess Rich and Lindsey Shoden by a score of 2-8.

Sunday started with Bemidji State playing against the University of South Dakota Coyotes and seeing more success than the previous night as the No. 2 doubles team of Julie Kapsner (Pierz, Minn.) and Amy Erickson (Roseau, Minn.) stayed with the team of Amanda Barton and Rachel Kludt but where defeated by a score of 5-8. The No. 2 singles spot saw Welu give Maggie Peters all she could handle as she forced a first set tiebreaker which was won by Peters 7-4 giving her the first set victory 7-6. Peters was later able to win the second set 6-2 giving her the win. Kapsner stayed competitive in the No. 4 singles spot puting up scores of 4-6, 3-6 to Barton. The Coyotes came away with the victory against the Beavers by a score of 9-0.

The second match of the day saw the Beavers face off against the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. The last time they met was the season opener for the Beavers back on February 4th which saw Duluth pull away with an 8-1 victory. Sunday saw the same outcome for the Beavers as they lost to the Bulldogs by a score of 0-9. A lineup change by coach Scott Sorenson saw Welu get her first action on the season at the No. 1 singles spot but found the change tough as she was defeated by the Bulldogs Anna Hockett 6-0, 6-2 victory.

The Beavers record now stands at 0-7 (0-2; NSIC) on the season. The Beavers will return to action on April 1st as they travel to Moorhead to take on the University of Minnesota Moorhead Dragons with the match scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
