Steinke honored by NSIC
Freshmans impressive play garners her player of the week

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State University freshman Farrah Steinke (Crosby, Minn.) has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference player of the week for her part in a 2-1 weekend in Sioux City, Iowa for the Beavers.

Steinke went 5-1 overall on the weekend winning all singles matches and going 2-1 at No. 3 doubles with Cheyanne Maki (So. Watford City, N.D.).

Steinke started her weekend with a loss at No. 3 doubles to the University of South Dakota team of Ashley Waltman and Janea Hagen 8-6. Steinke got her revenge at No. 5 singles defeating Waltman 2-6, 7-6, 10-8 with the second set tiebreaker being a marathon 12-10. Bemidji State fell in the match 7-2.

The next day Steinke would plow through the competition to help the Beavers to 7-2 victories over Morningside College and Briar Cliff University. Steinke and Maki defeated Morningside College’s Marisa Graham and Lynn Leonard 8-3 and Briar Cliff University’s Julia Robinson and Kayla Phillips 8-0. In singles Steinke would prevail over Graham 6-0, 6-1 and Robinson 6-1, 6-0.

Steinke has started her singles career with a 5-0 record all at No. 5 singles and has been victorious in nine of her last 10 singles and doubles matches.

Steinke’s award is the first of the season for the Beavers.

The two wins Sunday brought Bemidji State’s record to (3-5; 0-1; NSIC) which surpasses its win total of two from last season.

The Beavers return to action March 15 and 16 as they travel to St. Cloud, Minn. to take on Luther and St. Cloud State Saturday and will continue their NSIC schedule with a match against Winona State.

Bemidji State University, located in Bemidji, Minn., is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
